Hegseth AXES Navy Chief In ‘Golden Fleet’ Power Clash

Pentagon purge deepens amid Iran war tensions

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired John C. Phelan in a dramatic escalation of internal turmoil inside the Trump administration, as the US ramps up pressure on Iran in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Phelan’s removal follows a bitter dispute over President Donald Trump’s controversial “Golden Fleet” plan — an ambitious push to fast-track a new generation of nuclear-capable “Trump-class” battleships. Sources say the Navy chief was seen as obstructing the aggressive shipbuilding agenda, with critics branding him both ineffective and difficult to work with.

‘Golden Fleet’ sparks internal rebellion

At the heart of the clash is Trump’s demand to rapidly expand US naval power during a high-stakes confrontation with Tehran. The proposed fleet — featuring massive 30,000–40,000 ton warships — has raised eyebrows inside military circles, with concerns over cost, feasibility, and strategic necessity.

Phelan reportedly resisted the pace and scope of the plan, putting him on a collision course with Hegseth and senior Pentagon leadership. His exit clears the path for loyalists to push ahead with the president’s vision.

Navy Undersecretary Hung Cao will now step in as acting secretary, tasked with executing the administration’s maritime expansion during wartime conditions.

Military shake-up amid widening conflict

The firing is the latest in a sweeping purge of top brass. In recent weeks, more than a dozen senior officers have been removed, including high-ranking generals and intelligence chiefs — a sign of tightening control at the top as the conflict with Iran intensifies.

The timing is critical. US naval forces are now heavily engaged in enforcing a blockade on Iranian shipping routes, with tensions in the Gulf of Oman and surrounding waters pushing global trade routes to the brink. Traffic through Hormuz — once one of the world’s busiest النفط corridors — has collapsed to a trickle.

Power, pressure — and a risky gamble

Trump’s strategy is clear: squeeze Iran economically while projecting overwhelming military strength. But the cost is mounting — not just in geopolitical risk, but inside Washington itself.

With senior officials falling in rapid succession and policy driven from the top down, critics warn the administration is trading stability for speed at a moment when miscalculation could spiral into a far wider conflict.
