Thirty-eight Filipino crew members of the MV Hondius have tested negative for Hantavirus, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Friday, May 15. DMW Sec. Hans Leo Cacdac stated that 21 of these seafarers are currently under quarantine in Amsterdam, while the remaining 17 are en route to Rotterdam for testing. The announcement alleviated immediate concerns over a suspected outbreak onboard the cruise ship.

The background to this situation began on May 4, when the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that three passengers on the MV Hondius died from a suspected Hantavirus outbreak. Despite being a serious health concern, the WHO clarified that the virus does not signify a new pandemic. The 21 crew members in the Netherlands have shown no symptoms at this stage, Sec. Cacdac confirmed.

For the 17 crew members still aboard the ship, continuous monitoring and medical support has been ensured. They are expected to arrive in Rotterdam on Monday, May 18, for further testing and observation. The Department of Health (DOH) in the Philippines is set to lead the implementation of necessary health protocols before the crew can return home.

Looking forward, the exact date for the crew's return to the Philippines remains uncertain, pending the completion of quarantine and observation requirements. The health department's role in formulating clearances is crucial to ensure the homecoming procedure is thorough and safe.
