Lebanon ceasefire close to collapse after deadly Israeli strikes

Israeli airstrikes killed at least 10 civilians in southern Lebanon in a single day on Friday, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, in one of the deadliest escalations since the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took hold.

Among the dead were six paramedics and a Syrian child. The strikes are likely to intensify fears that the US-backed truce is rapidly unravelling as regional tensions spiral alongside the wider Iran conflict.

Paramedics Killed In Twin Strikes

The first attack struck the village of Hanouiyeh, where four paramedics linked to Hezbollah’s Islamic Health Association were killed while on duty. Two others were wounded, including another medic.

Hours later, a second strike hit Deir Qanoun al Nahr in Tyre province. Lebanese officials said six people died, including a Syrian girl and two paramedics from the Al-Rissala Scouts Association, a medical group affiliated with the Amal movement, Hezbollah’s political ally.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry accused Israel of violating international law, pointing to the growing toll on medical workers caught in the crossfire.

Healthcare System Under Fire

The strikes came a day after the World Health Organization said it had recorded 169 attacks on healthcare workers and facilities in Lebanon since the latest Israel-Hezbollah war erupted. The WHO says at least 116 people have been killed in those incidents.

Israel has repeatedly accused Hezbollah of using ambulances and civilian infrastructure to shield militant operations, though it has not publicly provided evidence for specific incidents.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on Friday’s attacks.

Washington Tightens Pressure

The violence comes as Washington escalates financial pressure on Hezbollah and its allies inside Lebanon’s state institutions. The US Treasury this week sanctioned several Hezbollah-linked lawmakers and two Lebanese security officials accused of assisting the group.

Lebanese military and security agencies responded with unusually sharp statements insisting their officers remain loyal only to the state.

But the diplomatic pressure is colliding with a battlefield that is again heating up. Hezbollah attacks, Israeli airstrikes and widening regional tensions have already pushed the death toll in Lebanon above 3,000, according to Lebanese authorities.

With negotiations stalling and Donald Trump facing calls for tougher action against Iran and its proxies, fears are growing that the ceasefire could collapse within days.

A senior Hezbollah MP has laid out the group’s conditions for a lasting ceasefire with Israel, warning that peace talks cannot move forward while Israeli strikes continue across southern Lebanon.

The intervention from Hezbollah lawmaker Hussein al Hajj Hassan comes as the fragile US-brokered truce edges closer to collapse after weeks of escalating violence, mounting civilian casualties and intensifying diplomatic pressure.

Ceasefire Exists In Name Only

Despite ongoing negotiations in Washington, fighting between the Israeli military and Hezbollah has continued almost daily since the ceasefire was announced a month ago.

UNIFIL peacekeepers and Lebanese officials say they have recorded more than 5,700 Israeli violations by land, sea and air, including nearly 2,400 airstrikes involving warplanes and drones.

Lebanon’s health ministry says more than 3,000 people have been killed since the conflict reignited in early March, including children, medical workers and civilians trapped near frontline areas. Israel says 21 of its soldiers have died in operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon during the same period.

Hezbollah Draws Its Red Lines

Speaking during rare direct questioning by reporters, al Hajj Hassan insisted Hezbollah was not seeking endless war but “a peace with dignity and independence”.

He set out three core demands for any lasting ceasefire. First, Israel must halt all military attacks on Lebanese territory. Second, Israeli forces must fully withdraw from southern Lebanon. Third, Lebanese prisoners must be released and displaced civilians allowed to safely return home and rebuild.

Only after those conditions are met, he argued, could indirect negotiations seriously begin.

“We don’t negotiate under fire,” he said. “That’s not negotiation. That’s humiliation.”

Historic Grievances Still Driving Conflict

The Hezbollah MP repeatedly framed the conflict through the lens of history and resistance, rejecting the idea of direct political engagement with Israel while fighting continues.

In a striking comparison, he asked reporters to “imagine Churchill shaking hands with Hitler during the war”, arguing that previous Lebanon-Israel conflicts were resolved through indirect channels rather than face-to-face diplomacy.

The remarks underline how far apart both sides remain despite mounting international pressure for de-escalation. With airstrikes continuing and ceasefire breaches piling up, hopes for a durable settlement appear increasingly fragile.

Hezbollah MP reveals three things needed for lasting ceasefire with Israel

Wow, Hezbollah medics--were they carrying big guns, too? Not to mention that child, obviously a would-be suicide bomber given the chance.

This guy makes sense: "We don’t negotiate under fire,” he said. “That’s not negotiation. That’s humiliation.”

But, no, even in a "ceasefire", Israel keeps on killing.
