May 26May 26 Cambodia’s Senate president Hun Sen has demanded the prosecution and asset seizure of officials linked to the country’s online scam networks, warning that the crackdown must extend beyond criminal operators to those in positions of power. In a statement on Sunday, the former prime minister said provincial governors, military police chiefs and police chiefs who ignored orders should be removed from office. “You will not succeed by only cracking down on online scammers without targeting complicit officials and those who fail to execute orders,” he declared.Hun Sen, who also leads the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, urged authorities to send implicated officials to court and confiscate their properties. He further called for suspects to be questioned on how they entered Cambodia without passports, raising concerns over corruption and border security. The remarks follow a series of raids on scam centres across the country. Between July 2025 and mid‑April 2026, Cambodian authorities shut down more than 250 operations, including 91 casinos, and deported over 13,000 foreign nationals involved.Earlier this year, Cambodia introduced a tough new law against online scams, imposing penalties of up to 30 years or life imprisonment for ringleaders. The legislation was hailed as a major step, but critics argue enforcement remains undermined by official complicity.Hun Sen’s intervention highlights the scale of the challenge. While thousands of foreign workers have been deported, the networks continue to thrive, often shielded by powerful figures. By demanding prosecutions and asset seizures, the Senate president has placed fresh pressure on the government to prove its commitment to dismantling both the scam industry and the protection that sustains it.-2026-05-26 ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français ThaiVisa, it's also in French
