Lead Prosecutor Quits Comey Case In Fresh Twist To 86 47 Threat

Prosecutor Leaves High-Profile Case

The federal prosecutor who secured the indictment against former FBI Director James Comey has stepped away from the criminal case accusing him of threatening President Donald Trump, according to a recent court filing.

A notice filed in federal court revealed that prosecutor Matthew Petracca will no longer represent the Justice Department in the case and has been replaced by Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Severo.

No Explanation Given

The filing offered no explanation for Petracca's departure, fueling speculation about the future direction of one of the most politically charged prosecutions currently facing the Justice Department.

Reports indicate Petracca has also withdrawn from several other criminal cases in recent days, though neither the Justice Department nor court officials have publicly commented on the reasons behind the move.

Case Centers On '86 47' Post

Comey faces two federal charges linked to a social media photograph showing seashells arranged to form the numbers "86 47."

Federal prosecutors argue the message amounted to a threat against Trump, while Comey has insisted he viewed it as a political statement and was unaware it could be interpreted as advocating violence.

The former FBI director deleted the post after criticism from Trump allies but has consistently denied any criminal intent.

Trial Set For October

The case is scheduled to go before a jury in October after a judge approved a request from Comey's legal team to delay proceedings.

Comey has portrayed the prosecution as politically motivated, arguing he has been repeatedly targeted by the Trump administration because of his criticism of the president.

Political Battle Intensifies

The prosecutor's departure adds another layer of intrigue to a case that has already become a flashpoint in the wider battle between Trump and one of his most prominent longtime critics.

With trial now only months away, attention is likely to focus on whether the change in prosecutors signals a routine personnel move—or something more significant behind the scenes.

SOURCE

These prosecutors are obviously no dummies and realize they can lose their license to practice law if they bring false charges that not only have no merit but are obviously revenge cases.
