Warning of Putin ‘false flag’ plot raises fears of new front

Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus leader

Fresh warnings from a political analyst have fuelled concerns that Russia could be preparing a staged provocation to draw Belarus deeper into the Ukraine conflict, potentially opening a dangerous new front on Kyiv’s northern border.

The claims centre on the possibility of a so-called “false flag” operation — an incident allegedly designed to appear as a Ukrainian attack on Belarus, creating a pretext for a major military escalation.

Ghosts of 1939 Return to the Debate

Political analyst Alexander Demchenko has suggested the Kremlin may be exploring tactics reminiscent of the 1939 Gleiwitz incident, the staged operation used by Nazi Germany to justify its invasion of Poland.

Speaking on a Ukrainian broadcast, Demchenko argued that a manufactured attack could be presented as evidence of Ukrainian aggression against Belarus, dramatically altering the political and military landscape of the war.

The claims remain speculative and no evidence has been publicly presented to support the allegation. However, the warning highlights persistent fears over escalation in a conflict already entering a critical phase.

Lukashenko’s Balancing Act Under Scrutiny

Attention has also turned to Alexander Lukashenko, whose recent public comments have prompted questions about tensions behind the scenes between Minsk and Moscow.

Analysts argue the Belarusian leader has sought to avoid direct involvement in the war while maintaining his close alliance with Vladimir Putin. That balancing act has become increasingly difficult as Russia continues to seek strategic advantages against Ukraine.

Any move forcing Belarus into a more active military role would carry significant political risks for Lukashenko at home.

Why Ukraine’s North Matters

Military observers say the strategic value of Belarus remains clear. Its territory borders northern Ukraine and sits within striking distance of Kyiv.

A major security incident could provide justification for deeper military integration between Russian and Belarusian forces, while also enabling a larger Russian deployment near Ukraine’s northern frontier.

A Conflict Still Searching for New Pressure Points

More than four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion, both sides continue to look for ways to shift momentum on the battlefield.

Whether the warning proves prescient or not, it underscores a growing concern among analysts: that the next phase of the war may not be defined solely by events on the front line, but by attempts to reshape the conflict through political and strategic manoeuvring beyond it.
