PHNOM PENH, 19 June 2026 — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to Russia, calling Moscow a “longstanding and reliable partner” as the two nations celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations.

Meeting President Vladimir Putin in Kazan, Manet stressed that Cambodia’s stance remains unchanged despite shifting global dynamics. “Our position is based on political trust, mutual support and shared interests,” he said, adding that Russia continues to play an important role in Cambodia’s development and international engagement.

The Cambodian leader recalled the Soviet Union’s assistance after the fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979, when thousands of Cambodians studied and trained in Soviet institutions. He said this legacy created enduring ties that remain central to the relationship today.

Manet also conveyed greetings from King Norodom Sihamoni and Senate president Hun Sen, while congratulating Russia on its recent National Day and successful hosting of the Eurasian summit.

Beyond history, the talks highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, investment, energy and tourism. Manet praised Russia’s role in strengthening the UN system, amplifying the voice of the Global South and promoting Eurasian connectivity.

The meeting underscored Cambodia’s intention to maintain close relations with Moscow even as global alliances shift. Analysts note that the partnership, established in 1956, has evolved from post‑conflict aid to a broader agenda covering economic and political cooperation.

For Phnom Penh, the anniversary is not only a celebration of past solidarity but also a signal of its determination to keep Russia at the heart of its foreign policy.
