How much would it cost to process this guy through the courts, including all jail, court and transport costs? How much might he get fined in court, and what would the shop owner see of this 'fine'? On the surface it seems to me that what happened is the cheapest outcome for Thailand, the shop owner gets his item back plus compensation, and the India thief pays more than he might have done? Not saying it's right what has happened of course. Not sure it's right that the police get 'paid' too. In fact, there are many things wrong with how this has been handled. But...I remember a UK police friend of mine moaning to me a few years ago about the amount of time it took to process a thief (theft from a shop), which meant they couldn't do other crime-related work, and the thief got a conditional discharge with no fine. The cost of all of that must have been in thousands, maybe in 10's of thousands, all at practically zero cost to the thief. To me, this isn't right either. And when they were doing the paperwork how many other crimes went un-resolved. The is massively wrong IMHO. But all these wrongs don't make a right, but on balance I kind of prefer the swift justice. I also prefer that the thief is taken direct to the airport.

In some ways it is efficient. I would have expected the Indian to haggle it down much further!

May 6May 6 The Indians seem to be getting into quite a bit of trouble lately....Plus, they choose very low quality fans....490 baht is rock bottom quality..
