Trump orders permanent White House fence after Iran threat

The Trump administration is moving ahead with plans to install permanent security fencing around parts of the White House complex following heightened concerns over threats linked to Iran and a series of recent security incidents.

A joint proposal released by the White House, the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of the Interior outlines plans to replace temporary barriers around Lafayette Square with a permanent security fence standing between eight and nine feet high.

Security upgrade planned

Lafayette Square, the historic park directly opposite the White House, has long served as both a major tourist attraction and a focal point for demonstrations.

Officials say the new fencing is intended to improve long-term security while preserving the park's historic character and maintaining public access wherever possible.

The proposal states that the aim is to "enhance long-term safety, preserve the park's identity as a significant National Park Service landscape, and maintain public access to this nationally symbolic space."

More barriers around the White House

The plan also considers additional fencing at key junctions along Pennsylvania Avenue, including the intersections with 15th and 17th Streets NW.

According to reports, those barriers could be closed during periods of heightened security, allowing authorities to block pedestrian access directly in front of the White House when intelligence or emerging threats require tighter protection.

Detailed designs for those additional security measures have yet to be released.

Iran threat raises concerns

The proposal comes amid increased concern over threats against President Donald Trump following reports that U.S. intelligence has received information about alleged Iranian assassination plots targeting the president.

Although officials have not publicly linked the fencing project to any single intelligence report, the timing reflects growing concern over the security environment surrounding the White House.

Temporary fencing has frequently been erected around the complex during periods of unrest, major demonstrations and high-profile events, but the latest proposal would make many of those protections permanent.

Review before construction

The Commission of Fine Arts is scheduled to review the proposal next week before the project moves forward.

If approved, phased construction could begin as early as next year, marking one of the most significant permanent security upgrades around the White House in recent years.

The project reflects the administration's view that evolving security threats require more robust and lasting protection for one of America's most recognisable government buildings.
