Married extension application - children in the photos

Featured Replies

Every year when we apply for my extension we provide photos of the 4 of us (wife, 2 sons and me).

My sons are now in their early 20s, live away from home at Uni. Getting them to return home for photos is difficult to arrange. Is it necessary for the photos to include our sons, or could it just be the wife and me?

[Note the application includes copies of son's birth certificates, Thai IDs and their blue book.]

Why don't you ask at the Immigration location where you do your extension ?

I don't see that children even enter into the equation at any age.

It's an extension based on a valid marriage.

Should only need pictures of you, wife and residence, seeing it's a marriage extension and not a dependent one. This from AI..............No, you do not need pictures of grown children. For a standard Thai marriage extension (Non-Immigrant O Visa extension), the required photographs focus exclusively on the married couple and your shared residence to prove you are living together as a married couple.

Required Photos for Marriage Extension

Immigration generally requires 4 to 6 color photographs of you and your Thai spouse:

  • Outside your home: Standing together showing the house number and street.

  • Inside your home: Pictured together in the living room, kitchen, and bedroom.

(Note: Some local immigration offices require these photos to be printed on standard A4 paper or attached to an official document, so check with your local office in advance).

When Are Children's Photos Required?

Photos and documents regarding children are only required if you are applying for an extension based on supporting a dependent Thai child (e.g., you and the child live together, or they are minors in school), NOT for a spouse-based extension.

General Spouse Visa Extension Requirements

When making a marriage extension, you will need to provide:

  • Your valid passport.

  • Your legal Thai marriage certificate (Kor Ror 3 and Kor Ror 2).

  • Your wife's Thai ID card and house registration (Tabien Baan).

  • Proof of financial stability: Either 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account for two months, or a monthly income of 40,000 THB.

  • A hand-drawn map to your residence.

Certainly including your children during their childhood dependancy age in your married application helps prove that you are in a real marriage situation - and maybe that's why we've never had a visit by Immigration to our house. However now they are older than child dependancy age it doesn't seem necessary to include them in my application hence my query for other's opinions.

Indeed, despite what may be thought they do have a bearing on the issue.

Back in 2015 when I went to do my second marriage extension, the IO looked and said where are the witnesses. My wife said it should only be for first extension and IO said rules changed this year and witnesses required for 2nd extension when childless marriage. I changed the application and walked out with a retirement extension.

When the embassy letter ended I had to go back to marriage extension and have had a home visit for every extension application since.

Because it's an hour each way just to ask a question.

I am about to do my first marriage extension at Udon and in their list they require 2 witnesses.

I will enquire if they are needed each year.

Why would you need your children and their photos?

What about marriages where there are no kids involved?

Furthermore, gay marriages, no kids again.

I definitely can't see it being a requirement.

AI

"when applying for or renewing a Thai marriage visa extension, you must provide your children's details. You will need to submit copies of their birth certificates and household registration (Tabian Baan), and they may occasionally need to be present at the immigration office for family photos"

7. Children ‘s Birth Certificate

It isn't 100% clear if children should appear in the photos at home, but as they are my family and as I have to provide their birth certificate (and now blue book pages) we have always included them in the photos.

I'll get clarification from the imm office when I next do my extension.

Yeah well,

You've already covered the photo aspect by previously supplying them.

They most certainly aren't asking for them regularly, according to your AI above.

What next, do they want their height and weight on an annual basis?

Furthermore, it's simple to explain if they are away studying.

Chat GPT says ;-

For a 1-year extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai national (Non-O Marriage), the answer depends on whether you and your Thai spouse have children together.

If you do not have children, you normally do not need to provide any documents about children.

If you do have children, many immigration offices will ask for:

  • Copies of the child's Thai birth certificate.

  • Copies of the child's house registration (Tabien Baan).

  • Copies of the child's Thai ID card (if the child is old enough to have one).

  • If the parents were married outside Thailand, they may also ask for evidence that the marriage has been recognized in Thailand if it affects the child's legal status.

If your spouse has children from a previous relationship

If those children are not your children, they are generally not relevant to a marriage extension. Some immigration offices may ask whether there are children living in the household, but they do not normally require documentation unless your application is actually based on supporting a Thai child rather than a Thai spouse.

For a Thai marriage extension of stay (based on marriage to a Thai national), there is no national Immigration Bureau regulation that specifically requires photographs with children, even if you have children together.

The standard photo requirements are typically things like:

  • You and your spouse outside your home showing the house number.

  • You and your spouse inside the home, such as in the living room.

  • You and your spouse in the bedroom.

  • You and your spouse together in another area of the house.

Some local immigration offices ask for additional photos that help demonstrate a genuine relationship. If you have children living with you, an officer may suggest including a family photo, but that is a local practice rather than a legal requirement.

Somehow two dogs always end up in our pictures.

BTW anyone worried about pictures may wish to explore what pictures are required for a business visa/WP

They dropped the witness requirement in person at my office. I have done 2 first extensions in recent years and only had to provide copies of witness ID and tabian bahn. Sometimes the witnesses have had to be present on home visit.
