Israel expands vast earth barrier across Gaza

Israel is rapidly constructing a miles-long earth barrier through Gaza, reinforcing its control over more than half of the territory and raising fresh doubts over whether the current ceasefire lines will ever be rolled back.

Satellite imagery shows more than 14 miles of embankments have been built in recent months across demolished Palestinian communities. The Israeli military has confirmed it is constructing a physical barrier along the so-called "yellow line", describing it as a security measure to protect troops and nearby Israeli communities.

Temporary Line Appears to Be Hardening

The yellow line was established under the October ceasefire agreement as a temporary military boundary before a wider Israeli withdrawal. But with implementation of the deal stalled, the expanding barrier is fuelling fears among Palestinians that the separation could become permanent.

The military said it has established a security zone equipped with intelligence and surveillance systems but declined to say how far the barrier will ultimately extend.

Construction Reshapes the Landscape

Satellite images indicate construction has accelerated across southern and central Gaza. One southern section grew by more than a mile in just two weeks this month, while another continuous stretch now runs for around 10 miles between Khan Younis and areas near Gaza City.

Israeli forces have also carved new roads, established military bases and levelled large areas of former residential neighbourhoods. The military says the demolitions target Hamas infrastructure, while much of Gaza's displaced population remains concentrated west of the boundary in overcrowded tent camps dependent on humanitarian aid.

Ceasefire Remains Under Strain

The barrier's expansion comes as the ceasefire faces mounting pressure. Israeli forces continue to conduct strikes across Gaza, while the military says it opens fire on individuals it believes threaten its troops near the security zone.

Palestinian casualties have continued to mount during the truce, with local health officials reporting further civilian deaths following recent airstrikes. Israel says it targets Hamas militants and accuses the group of preventing progress towards a lasting settlement.

Peace Process Stuck in Limbo

Under the ceasefire framework, Israeli troops were expected to withdraw further and eventually hand security responsibilities to an international force. Those plans have stalled amid continuing disagreements over Hamas' future and the disarmament of militant groups.

As diplomacy remains deadlocked, the expanding barrier has become a visible symbol of a conflict with no clear political resolution. For many on both sides, the facts being built on the ground may shape Gaza's future long before negotiators reach any lasting agreement.
