Khnang Phsar, once a remote mountain outpost in Kampong Speu province, is fast becoming one of Cambodia’s most talked‑about green tourism destinations. Backed by government investment and driven by local community management, the site is now a showcase for how rural development and conservation can go hand in hand.

The Ministry of Environment has designated the mountain in Oral district as a community‑run eco‑tourism hub. Around 100 families are set to benefit directly, with new infrastructure ensuring livelihoods are strengthened while the fragile Cardamom Mountains are protected. A recent field visit organised for 15 media outlets highlighted the transformation taking place in Taing Bampong village.

Hun Sao, who heads the Roleak Kang Choeung Community Protected Area, explained that upgraded roads, visitor facilities and services have opened the site to a wider audience. “Tourism has enabled many families to move beyond subsistence living, earn higher incomes and improve household livelihoods,” he said. Once reliant on forest products, 95% of residents now work in tourism, offering guided treks, accommodation, camping gear, meals and local produce such as rice wine and herbal liquor.

Provincial environment director Chanthet Thannarak noted that over the past two years, roads have been rebuilt and essential facilities added – from toilets and food stalls to an emergency station, community market and water supply. The changes have broadened the visitor base, attracting not only young adventurers but also older travellers seeking accessible nature experiences.

The project includes a seven‑kilometre access road, hiking trails and seven scenic viewpoints. Ministry spokesman Khvay Atitya said the initiative supports Cambodia’s wider environmental strategy: “By improving livelihoods and natural resource management, the Khnang Phsar Green Tourism Project demonstrates how communities can thrive while conserving their environment.”

For residents, the shift has been profound. Tourism income is helping families build savings, invest in education and secure a more stable future. For visitors, Khnang Phsar now offers a rare chance to experience the beauty of the Cardamom Mountains while supporting sustainable development.
