Thai AirAsia Shifts Nine Routes to Don Mueang

Featured Replies

Travellers flying with Thai AirAsia will need to double-check their departure airport after the airline temporarily suspended all nine of its domestic routes from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The changes will remain in place until September 30, with all affected services operating instead from Don Mueang International Airport. Thai AirAsia said it plans to resume flights from Suvarnabhumi on October 1.

Temporary network changes

The airline said the move forms part of a wider adjustment to its flight network following a sharp rise in aviation fuel costs and slower travel demand during the middle of the year.

Earlier this year, Thai AirAsia also reduced its average flight capacity by 30% during May and June for the same reasons.

The routes affected by the temporary suspension from Suvarnabhumi are:

  • Chiang Mai

  • Phuket

  • Buri Ram

  • Chiang Rai

  • Hat Yai

  • Khon Kaen

  • Nakhon Si Thammarat

  • Surat Thani

  • Udon Thani

Although flights from Suvarnabhumi have been suspended, services on all nine routes continue to operate from Don Mueang, which remains Thai AirAsia’s main operating base.

What it means for travellers

For foreign tourists, expats and business travellers, the most important change is the departure airport rather than the destination. Anyone with an existing booking should check their itinerary carefully to ensure they travel to Don Mueang instead of Suvarnabhumi.

Bangkok’s two main airports are around 40 kilometres apart and travel times between them can vary considerably depending on traffic. Passengers connecting from international flights arriving at Suvarnabhumi should allow extra time if they need to transfer to Don Mueang for a domestic AirAsia service.

Travellers are also advised to confirm airport details before arranging transport or accommodation, particularly if they booked flights before the network changes were announced.

Fuel costs and softer demand

Thai AirAsia said the temporary suspension reflects a combination of sharply higher aviation fuel prices and weaker travel demand, prompting the airline to adjust its operations during the current period.

The carrier expects to restore its Suvarnabhumi domestic services from October 1, ending the temporary relocation of the nine routes to Don Mueang.
