Trump and Netanyahu seek united front despite signs of growing tensions

President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have presented a united front following talks at the White House, despite fresh signs of friction over Iran and Washington's role in the Middle East.

The meeting came after Trump publicly expressed irritation that details of Netanyahu's planned briefing on Iran had been leaked before the two leaders sat down together.

Trump rebukes Netanyahu over Iran leak

Ahead of the Oval Office meeting, Trump dismissed reports that Netanyahu intended to present intelligence suggesting Iran was rebuilding parts of its nuclear programme at the heavily fortified Pickaxe Mountain facility.

"I don't need Bibi to tell me that," Trump said during an interview with Fox & Friends, using his long-standing nickname for the Israeli leader.

Trump suggested Netanyahu wanted to keep the United States deeply involved in confronting Iran and questioned why the information had been discussed publicly before their meeting.

"Why don't you just tell it to me? Why do you have to announce it to the world?" the president asked.

Netanyahu's office declined to comment on Trump's remarks.

Leaders stress strong partnership

Despite the unusually blunt criticism, both sides sought to play down any suggestion of a rift after the talks concluded.

Netanyahu described the meeting as "excellent" and said it was among the best conversations he had ever had with Trump.

He said the discussions reflected "full partnership, mutual support and a shared understanding" that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.

Photographs released by the Israeli government showed the two leaders smiling together in the Oval Office alongside Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The White House also described the talks as positive and productive.

Iran remains top priority

Iran dominated much of the discussion as the Trump administration continues to balance military pressure with diplomatic efforts.

Although Trump recently paused U.S. airstrikes against Iranian targets, his administration has warned that military action could resume if Tehran threatens American interests or accelerates its nuclear programme.

Netanyahu has consistently urged Washington to maintain pressure on Iran and remains deeply sceptical of any renewed diplomatic negotiations.

The leaders were also expected to discuss expanding the Abraham Accords by encouraging Saudi Arabia to establish formal diplomatic relations with Israel.

However, Riyadh continues to insist that progress toward Palestinian statehood remains a condition for joining the agreement.

Ukraine also on the agenda

Before meeting Netanyahu, Trump held private talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Ukrainian leader later said the discussions focused on strengthening Ukraine's air defences, including expanding production of Patriot missile interceptors and increasing cooperation on drone technology.

Relations between Trump and Zelenskyy have improved in recent months as Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian military and energy infrastructure.

According to reports, senior U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are also expected to visit Ukraine as Washington explores renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war.

Political pressures at home

The White House meeting comes amid reports that Netanyahu is seeking Trump's support ahead of Israel's forthcoming election campaign.

Although the two leaders remain close allies, recent disagreements have highlighted occasional tensions over how aggressively to confront Iran and the wider direction of U.S. policy in the Middle East.

An earlier telephone conversation between the pair reportedly became heated after Trump urged restraint over regional military operations, illustrating that even close strategic partners can differ over tactics.

For now, however, both leaders appear keen to project unity as conflicts in both the Middle East and Ukraine continue to shape the international agenda.
