On Phuket...what if?

Featured Replies

As most of you have noticed, in a lot of countries (not only in the southern hemisphere) wildfires are raging with a seldom seen violence. As a Phuket resident, I wonder what would happen if a wildfire of this dimension happens here.

Are the firefighters equipped to tackle such a fire? Trucks, Helicopters, Planes, Firefighters etc..?

What are the emergencies procedures? Not only for Foreign Residents/Tourists but also for the local population.

Is there a place that distributes emergency bags, as the Red Cross does in Europe?

As the brush clearing, from what I see on a daily basis, seems to be not in the dictionary here, and not only in Thailand, how can a disaster be avoided?

It's a good point. I live in the middle of a coconut plantation on Koh Phangan. If there were a wildfire, I'd be toast...

wont happen as its never dry enough here

Phuket has droughts and it has forest fires.

It also has a history of fires at worker sites and in built up areas.

I do NOT consider that a forest fire

The point is that there are fires on Phuket. 60% the island has been deforested. Of the tree cover that remains, a large part is palm oil farms and hard to reach places. The fires that are in difficult to reach locations can get a foothold. Every year fires occur. It coincides with the drought period. You do know that Phuket has droughts don't you? The point of the link was to illustrate the type of fires.

Workers camps on Phuket are not necessarily in "open areas" . They are usually hidden away in a loose forest area. It is intentional. The employers don't want the labour seen and they tend to be in areas where forests are being cleared for development. There are inadequate facilities at these camps and it is not unusual for cooking fires to occur.
