A statue of Yonatan Netanyahu, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s older brother, has been unveiled at the old Entebbe Airport terminal where he was killed leading an elite IDF force in the rescue of hostages in 1976.

“It is a great honor and privilege to join you at this historic site as we unveil this monument to Lieutenant Colonel Yonatan ‘Yoni’ Netanyahu, the courageous commander of the Israeli rescue force whose leadership and ultimate sacrifice during the Entebbe raid of July 4, 1976, has become an enduring symbol of courage, duty and selfless service,” said Uganda’s military chief Gen. The raid on Entebbe, and the rescue of the hostages was a phenomenal feat of arms, notable not only for the audacity of the plan, the courage with which it was carried out and the speed and thoroughnesd with which such a daring plan was put together.

It wrote the book for raiding "special ops", and is still studied by professional military everywhere.

It is worth noting that if any of those participating are still alive (50 odd years on) then they are long past serving or having any influrnce in the current Israeli Defence Force, and bear no responsibility for the mess it finds itself in - a mess which Is largely created by it's political leadership.

At that time, no one outside Israel thought such a rescue would be possible. That's why the terrorists chose Uganda. Yoni Netanyahu was the only IDF soldier killed, but unfortunately three hostages lost their lives in the crossfire and an elderly hostage who had been taken to a hospital was later tortured and killed by Ugandan security forces.

The unveiling came after Kainerugaba earlier this year announced plans to place a statue of Yoni Netanyahu “at the exact spot” where he was killed

Given Uganda's past experience with holding Israelis against their will, I doubt the Ugandan authorities would move against Yoni's brother.

And no matter what anyone thinks about the policies of the current Israeli government, the raid on Entebbe Airport is without doubt one of, if not the, bravest and most audacious military rescue missions of all time. The only rescue missions I can think of that rival Entebbe were the raids by U.S. military units and Filipino guerrillas to free Allied prisoners and civilians at Los Baños and Cabanatuan in the Philippines during WW2.
