Thai tax -- basic question about US social security remitted income

Featured Replies

OK,

Here is what has been been my understanding.

Have it got it right or if not, please opine differently.

Simple scenario.

US national tax resident in Thailand only income remitted to Thailand in a tax year being social security income'.

Assumption One:

Based on the US -Thai DTA social security income is taxable ONLY in the US so therefore such income remitted to Thailand is not assessable income subject to Thai tax.

Assumption Two:

Because such income is not assessable income for Thai taxation, remitted such income is NOT a texable event, and the income from that does NOT need to be reported on a Thai tax filing

Assumption Three:

As above if the only income is such non assessable income, there is no need to obtain a TIN (Thai tax id number)

Assumption Four;

There isn't even a space on Thai tax forms for such non assessable income.

Here we go.

This guy again!

ARGHHH.

Yeah, I know.

Actually it was watching this video that prompted me to question whether my assumption that you don't have to file with only SS income is actually true. He seems to suggest you might need to file even though no tax on it.

As usual, uncomfortably vague.

Bumping this.

Maybe boiling this down to one sentence will help.

Do Americans who live in Thailand on remitted social security income alone need to file tax returns in Thailand (as under the treaty social security is taxable only in the US)?

AI computer says no:

Tax Filing Requirements for Americans in Thailand

Social Security Income and Tax Obligations

Americans living in Thailand who receive only U.S. Social Security benefits are not required to file a Thai tax return. This is due to the U.S.–Thailand tax treaty, which designates taxing rights to the U.S. and exempts Social Security income from Thai taxation.

What happens if retirement accounts withdraws are added to the mix?
