Workers strip naked at Govt House protest

BANGKOK: -- Dissatisfied with the Thai government's failure to help them receive severance pay after their garment factory closed without advance notice, 10 laid-off women workers on Tuesday stripped naked in front of Government House where Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chulanont was meeting with the Cabinet.

About 300 labor union members workers at the Inter Moda garment factory in the Rangsit area of north suburban Bangkok have been protesting at Government House since Monday, demanding that the government step in and help them get severance pay following the closure of their company on August 26 without informing the workers.

They asked the government to pay some Bt24 million in severance pay which the company failed to give to them, and suggested the government could collect fro0m the company.

The workers earlier blocked all entrances to Government House, causing inconvenience for government workers and visitors.

As the government kept silent in response to their demands, 10 women workers stripped off their clothes and covered themselves with printed banners instead and marched to a small gate of the Government House. They stood in front of the policemen while some shouted that they now had nothing and yet had to support their families.

The protesting workers later demanded that the government respond to them by September 19.

Less than a kilometre away, a thousand demonstrators from the eastern resort of Rayong province traveled to Bangkok and gathered at the Ministry of Education to hand over a letter to the prime minister protesting the plan to build a coal-powered electrical power plant there by IRPC Public Co. Ltd.

They said they had gathered more than 15,000 signatures of Rayong residents who opposed building the plant.

They threatened to rally again Saturday in Rayong and would wait for a reply by the government.

As I mentioned the last time this kind of naked protest was done publicly in Thailand, it's actually a time-honored traditional form of extreme protest. Jesus basically encouraged it in Matthew 5:40 and Luke 6:29, and it has been used in many places and centuries. Its effect is to shame the official, so that he is responsible and loses face, not the naked subjects. That's what we see here, the ladies shaming the government for lack of protection.

Sometime ago, the gov't said that troubled businesses should provide training for employees. Perhaps these ladies are getting ready for a career change.

Looks like the ladies had a great time with their protest. If they bring some dancing poles next time, they will get my undying support.

Not all Thai women are tiny and in Thailand for your eye candy Mr Handsum man. Might come as a surprise that some of the women here have bigger issues to deal with, than worrying about whether or not you rate them.

I think a lot of western men here have blinkers on when it comes to looking around them, because i see women of all shapes and sizes. Maybe its just around certain areas where women are expected to be young-ish and slimmer-ish, that men get much of their perspective of Thai women from...who knows. But, regardless of the fact that women are subject to derogatory comments regardless of how physically attractive she is, its kinda lame to focus on those womens bodies, when they are trying to protest about something that is important to them and their families.

But im sure you are cushy at home raking in your millions of baht and glancing in the mirror because you are oh so very handsome, so it becomes fun to joke about people who dont live up to your ideals of beauty, and who are going about mundane protests because they are concerned about keeping their families afloat.

Sorry for the rant...
