Just been to the annual CMU Book Fair, with dozens of stall set up around the university library in the centre of the campus. Mostly Thai-language books but one stall in particular, near the SCB ATM machines, has English paperback novels for 28 baht each or 5 for 100 baht. Not much choice but Robert Ludlum fans will be happy. Also saw John Grisham, some romance and a Somerset Maugham.

Good fresh fruit shakes for 10 baht too!

Think the fair continues until after the weekend.

It's not worth samlor fare there for one Somerset Maugham that will probably be gone. :D

Blimey UG - would you really get some old chap to peddle you all the way to CMU? :o

I guess all the Primo Levi stuff will be gone by now :D

If you don't have one, you can slap the old fellow in the head every once in a while with an old hardback book. :o

Especially on the way to Doi Suthep :D

If there is anything I hate, it is a slow trip up Doi Suthep on the back of one of those bicycle samlor thingies! :o

Coming down is a breeze if the poor chap is still alive and a real thrill if he's not :D

UG - What's the deal with Somerset Maugham?

Are you a great fan or do you agree with him when he said, "The great American novel has not only already been written, it has already been rejected".

Mr Maugham considered himself to be one of the best "B" writers. I have no doubt at all that he really belongs with the "A" team. :o

Interesting, I thought that Maugham felt that he was never treated quite as seriously as he deserved. However I guess this seems a little steep coming from a writer who wittily admitted that, "There are three basic rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately nobody knows what they are".

My favourite SM quote is; "if you want to eat well in England, you had better eat breakfast three times aday"

How true :D
