mike1963
Hi all Visted the private hospital in Buriram today called Ekachon I believe (nothing in English) and was a bit disappointed, my wife needed to see 2 doctors on 2 separate issues and was told one doctor was available 5 hours later and the other one was in a weeks time in the morning. I thought I was back in Blighty at the old NHS!!! This is after all a private hospital but not so good me thinks, what do you think? So I know there are some really good hospitals in Khorat (approx 1 1/2 - 2 hours) and was wondering if Surin for example had a better hospital to offer. Please may I have your recommendations Re Buriram 4 real you could definitely put healthcare on your prospective website Thanks- Mike
TheExpat
Stay away from Surin. I almost coded there from a bad mix of drugs they gave me. they never fixed a problem, but almost cost me my life. I went from a private room to ICU because of the drugs they injected me with. Had to go to Bangkok to be fixed up. However, i am very impressed with Aek Udon International Hospital in Udonthani. Very professional and they speak English. It is a bit far, so Bumrungrad in Bangkok is your next choice. Edited December 17, 2007 by TheExpat

Although a private hospital, and relatively cheap compared to the extortionate prices charged in Bangkok and Pattaya, there is still a dearth of patients due to Buriram being one of the poorest provinces in Thailand. Ekachon do their best, but clearly cannot have doctors available all day for just a few patients. This is just one of the pitfalls of choosing to live in the sticks. I had considered using Surin Ruam Phet private hospital for any future problems, as many local foreigners have given it good reports. However must reconsider/re-investigate in view of the comments by the Expat.
Dave the Dude
I had considered using Surin Ruam Phet private hospital for any future problems, as many local foreigners have given it good reports. However must reconsider/re-investigate in view of the comments by the Expat. I'v used that hospital many times (including a number of operations) and I have no complaints at all (and you can have ferang food delivered by the Ferang Connection!!) I am sorry TheExpat had such a bad time. Dave
mike1963
Thanks for those replies and Expat sorry to hear about your awful experience. I appreciate that "living in the sticks" has its drawbacks but I don't have a problem traveling to a hospital as long as it is worthwhile. I don't need things on my doorstep, I am just trying to source the best places/services available, time/distance is not too important as I don't live in the rat race anymore, so what's the hurry!!! Thanks Mike

There is a very good hospital in Khon Kaen, we had to take a neice there for some specialist stuff a few years back, but I can't remember its name... doh!! Maybe a resident can enlighten you

When I had kidney stones 2 years ago, just the 30 minute drive to Buriram Ekachon was too long! I was in excruciating pain and didn't know then what the problem was. Best to suss out a suitable local hospital for emergencies,
fruity
I had two stints in the Ekachon & could not heartily recommend it. I was in there the second time due to their incompetence in failing to fully remove a growth that appeared on my thigh. Second round involved removing the bits they'd missed first time! The total costs circa 60 k baht, fortunately paid for courtesy of BUPA. I will say that the standard of nursing care was good & the vip rooms ok & moderately well equipped. After weeks of trailing there eveyday as an outpatient for dressings the wounds healed, low & behold it is now apparant that they still didn't get the entire growth! As this causes me little discomfort & is nothing to really worry about I'm not going back for round three!

Sorry to hear about your bad ex-s A bit of a catch 22 - you need a local/ hospital fairly near in case of an emergency but the nearest one seems to get some bad press- Maybe I'll win the lottery and I can buy a helicopter Take care Mike
ClaytonSeymour
I've only visited Ekachon once, with a minor complaint & was quite satisfied with the service. I'd add that the Doctor who I saw spoke quite good English - better English than some of the Doctors from the Indian Sub-Continent who I've seen in the UK. ronthompson
My experience with the private Buriram hosp has been great. If your wife required a specialist your must always wait, that is the same in the States even if you have an appointment. u always wait for a good doctor - Bad ones no wait. If u find a good one get his phone number and call him for an appointment. If another hospital is better in regard to your problem it is only because the particular specialist is in at the time u arrived IMHO
