The company he sold to Singapore was HIS company.

Sure, except it's illegal for Prime Minister of Thailand to own any company, much less the market leader in telecoms. He shouldn't have been allowed even to run in the elections.

The election, on Dec.23rd proves the majority like the guy.

Just a correction - 40% doesn't make the majority, and in party list vote his party got even less than Democrats.

News flash from Iowa.Barack Obama emerged as the clear loser in the Iowa primary with almost 60% of the popular vote ranged against him.

I guess the much vaunted "Valentine Day's Return" is off....

Lawyer: Thailand's ousted PM Thaksin ready to return by April

BANGKOK, Thailand: Deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra plans to return to Thailand from self-imposed exile by mid-April and is prepared to defend himself in court against corruption-related charges, his lawyer said Monday.

Thai authorities have issued arrest warrants against Thaksin — who has mostly lived in London since his ouster in September 2006 — for allegedly violating stock-trading laws and on corruption-related charges.

Thaksin will not return until an elected government is in place following recent general elections, said Noppadol Pattama, Thaksin's lawyer and de facto spokesman.

Thaksin's allies won the Dec. 23 elections and say they have enough support from smaller parties to form a coalition government, which would enable them to appoint a prime minister of their choice after the lower house of parliament convenes Jan. 22.

Thaksin has lived abroad since he was deposed in a September 2006 military coup. He has vowed to stay out of politics but said he is ready to serve as an adviser to his allies in the People's Power Party.

"Thaksin will return by mid-April to face trial," Noppadol said, reiterating remarks Thaksin made last month. "He has confidence in the Thai judicial system."

The Supreme Court issued warrants in August for Thaksin and his wife, Pojamarn, related to a controversial 2003 land deal. Thaksin was charged with conflict of interest because Pojamarn bought the land from a government agency while he was prime minister.

Thailand's Channel 9 and TITV reported Tuesday night that Pojamarn would return to Bangkok on Tuesday morning, and was expected to be immediately arrested.

Police could not be reached for comment on the reports.

In September, a Thai criminal court issued another arrest warrant for Thaksin over alleged concealment of his ownership of millions of dollars worth of shares from the Thai stock exchange.

Both cases stem from investigations by the Assets Examination Committee, but Thaksin has accused the committee of bias. His People's Power Party allies say they would — if they form the next government — consider dissolving the committee and letting other counter-corruption agencies investigate.

"Since the country has returned to democracy, we will now consider a serious legal action against the Assets Examination Committee for bullying Thaksin and his family," Noppadol said.

Thaksin has already tried to file lawsuits against committee members, but courts found the cases groundless and refused to accept them.

Thaksin denies any wrongdoing while he was prime minister, from 2001 to 2006.

Thai former premier's wife to return to Thailand

BANGKOK -- Pojamarn Shinawatra, wife of Thailand's ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will return to Thailand on Tuesday, local media reported on Monday.

Pojamarn is scheduled to arrive at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport from Hong Kong at about 08:15 a.m. local time (0115 GMT) on Tuesday, a police source was quoted by local news network The Nation as saying.

"She is expected to face arrest as a court has issued an arrest warrant for her and her husband on an alleged abuse of power during Thaksin was acting prime minister," the report said.

Earlier, a prosecutor of the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) said that they will not hesitate to arrest former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife as soon as they arrives in Thailand.

Thaksin, the former premier who was ousted from the Government House during a military coup on Sept. 19, 2006, is facing criminal charges on a land deal and other dozens of cases. Thanksin said recently that he will return to Thailand during February to April next year.

LAND SCANDAL HEARING

Pojaman returns today

Thaksin's wife flies home this morning to face corruption charge in court

Pojaman Shinawatra, wife of ex-premier Thaksin, returns to Thailand this morning to fight a corruption case involving her questionable land purchase while her husband was in power, the National Police Chief said yesterday.

"We will provide safety for Pojaman at the airport and assign female police officers to escort her," General Seripisut Temiyavej said.

Pojaman is expected to take Thai Airways International flight TG 603 from Hong Kong and arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport some time after 9am, according to sources.

*Flight TG 603 departing Hong Kong at 08.00 hours, arriving in Bangkok at 09.40 hours.*

Thaksin is also now in Hong Kong.

The move came after Thaksin's remark that he would return to Thailand in April. The ex-PM has lived in exile in London since his government was overthrown in a military coup in September 2006.

Upon her arrival at the airport, Pojaman is expected to face arrest. The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions earlier issued an arrest warrant for her and Thaksin for alleged abuse of power.

The court has put on hold the trial as Thaksin, who lives in exile in London and Hong Kong, and Pojaman failed to show up at court hearings. However, the arrest warrants are still intact.

The couple face arrest after they failed to appear in court in the case stemming from Pojaman's purchase of a coveted land plot in Bangkok's Ratchadaphisek area from the government's Financial Institutions Development Fund.

Police from the Rachathewa station in Samut Prakan, which has jurisdiction over the airport, are to deal with initial paperwork involving Pojaman's arrest before she is taken to the Supreme Court, according to sources.

Pojaman will also show up at the Supreme Court before noon today to face the charges against her, according to a source close to her.

She had requested police protection from General Seripisut while on her way to the court, the source said. Pojaman also had prepared surety to be produced with the court in her request for temporary release.

Pojaman's daughter Pinthongta had coordinated with officials offering 5 Million Baht in bail, according to the source, who expected her to be released on bail.

In a related development, Rakkiat Pattanapong, Secretary to the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions, said yesterday that if Pojaman showed up today, a panel of judges could immediately hear her testimony.

He said police had not contacted judges about Pojaman's expected return.

Potjaman due to return today

Will be taken straight to court, says her aide

Potjaman Shinawatra will be taken into police custody the moment she lands at Suvarnabhumi airport today to face corruption charges on the controversial Ratchadaphisek land deal and share concealment involving SC Asset Co, a firm run by her family. National Police Chief Gen Seripisuth Temiyavej said the wife of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was due about 9am and would be put under police protection. She will come alone and ''police are ready for her return.'' A source said she would be arriving from Hong Kong on flight TG 603, due at 9.40am. The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions issued arrest warrants for Thaksin and his wife in August last year after the couple failed to appear for the first hearing in the 772-million-baht Ratchadaphisek land purchase case. Her aide said Potjaman will immediately go before the Supreme Court to defend the charges. Potjaman had prepared money to bail herself out of court. Thaksin and Potjaman face charges over the 33-rai Ratchadaphisek land purchase from the Financial Institutions Development Fund in 2003, and also over the intention to conceal assets in SC Asset, which is against the stock trading law. After appearing before the court, she will be taken by the Department of Special Investigation, who want her on the asset concealment charge, according to Mr Rakkiart.

Thaksin's wife set to return to Thailand on Tuesday

BANGKOK - The wife of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra would return to Bangkok on Tuesday morning to fight corruption charges, Thai national police chief Sereepisut Taemeyaves said on Monday.

Police General Sereepisut said Pojaman Shinawatra would arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport by 9 am (0200 GMT), and security measures had been stepped up to ensure her safety.

Gen Sereepisut brushed aside reports the ex-PM's wife would be arrested, saying police would escort her from the airport to the court in order to ensure no untoward incident occurs.

"As far as I know, Pojaman's planned return is to fight court cases and she would immediately seek court permission to grant her bail," said the national police chief.

Thaksin and his wife are charged with corruption in relation to the purchase of a 772 Million Baht plot of land in Bangkok's Rachadapisek area in 2003.

The former prime minister is accused of illegally influencing the deal and helping his wife to buy the government-owned land at a bargain price while he was in office. Thaksin and his wife have denied any wrongdoing.

Pojaman also has to fight charges of evading 546 Million Baht in back taxes involved in the 1997 transfer of shares in the family's telecommunications empire later known as Shin Corp.

Arrest warrants were issued for the couple for failing to appear before the Court, but the former premier, who was overthrown in a coup on September 19 2006 and who has been living overseas since, mainly in London, had repeatedly said he and his wife would not return to Thailand until after a general election was held and a new government formed.

Wife of ousted Thai PM returning home to face corruption charges

BANGKOK, Thailand - The wife of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra planned to return to Thailand on Tuesday to face corruption charges, her lawyer said.

Pichit Chuenban, chief lawyer for Pojamarn Shinawatra, said she would turn herself in upon arrival at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport and court proceedings would begin the same day.

Pichit told the Associated Press that Pojamarn had sent him a statement saying: "I intend to fight the charges in court ... I am willing to fight the case in court in accordance with the judicial system."

The case involves Pojamarn's 2003 purchase of some prime Bangkok real estate from the Financial Institutions Development Fund, a state rescue fund directed by the central bank.

An anti-corruption law bars prime ministers or their spouses from doing business with government agencies.

The Supreme Court issued warrants in August for Thaksin and his wife on charges of conflict of interest and malfeasance. Each charges carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

The couple also faces arrest over alleged concealment of his ownership of millions of dollars worth of shares from the Thai Stock Exchange.

The lawyer declined to talk about Thaksin, saying he was only charged with handling the case against Pojamarn.

But Thaksin's lawyer said Monday that the former prime minister plans to return to Thailand from self-imposed exile by mid-April and is also prepared to defend himself in court. Thaksin denies any wrongdoing while he was prime minister from 2001 to 2006. Thaksin has been living mostly in London since his ouster in a September 2006 military coup.

Mr. Udom said that the bail will be based on the discretion of the court officer.

As evidenced by the Pai policeman charged with murder being granted bail and the Bang Saen Godfather Somchai Khunpleum being granted bail AFTER his conviction for first degree murder, she'll no doubt be granted bail... still it would be interesting to see other well-established (elsewhere, anyway) criteria used for granting bail, such as any of these which would typically be grounds for seriously considering the denying of bail:

Is the person a flight risk?

Check, she was subpoenaed six months ago and failed to appear numerous times on numerous court dates with frequent postponements.

Does the suspect have the financial means to commit a flight from prosecution?

Check, and THEN some.

Is the potential punishment, if found guilty, severe?

Check, 20 years is a lengthy prison sentence.

Oh well, it's off to the mansion for her after the formalities.

Minister Theerapat voices support for Khunying Potjaman’s return to Thailand

Minister attached to the Office of the Prime Minister, Theerapat Serirangsan (ธีรภัทร์ เสรีรังสรรค์), expresses confidence that the return to the country of ex-premier’s wife Khunying Potjaman Shinawatra (พจมาน ชินวัตร) will not create political chaos.

The minister says he agrees that Khunying Potjaman should return to Thailand to defend herself in court concerning the Ratchadaphisek land deal case. He also expresses his belief that the courts will treat her fairly and the People’s Alliance for Democracy will not gather to protest against her.

Mr Theerapat adds that the commissioner-general of the Royal Thai Police affirmed he will ensure that Khunying Potjaman will be provided with security. He also assures no interference in the justice system.

Regarding the Council of National Security’s dispatch of officers to the office of the Election Commission (EC) in Buri Ram province, the minister says a protest to pressure the commission is not appropriate and suggests that those who disagree with EC should stick to laws.

Thaksin's wife returns to face corruption charges

1199766947.jpg

The wife of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra arrived in the Thai capital Tuesday morning with police escorting her from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport to the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions to fight corruption charges, police said.

Pojaman Shinawatra arrived on Thai International flight TG 603 from Hong Kong with no welcoming entourage of supporters to greet her at the airport.

Her lawyer, Pichit Chuenban, said earlier he had prepared Bt5 million surety to seek bail for his client.

Mr. Thaksin and his wife are charged with corruption in relation to the purchase of a Bt772 million plot of land in Bangkok's Rachadapisek area in 2003.

The former prime minister is accused of illegally influencing the deal and helping his wife purchase the government-owned parcel of land at a bargain price while he was in office.

Mr. Thaksin and his wife have denied any wrongdoing.

Arrest warrants were issued for the couple for failing to appear before the Court last year.

Mr. Thaksin's lawyer said Monday that the ousted prime minister plans to return to Thailand by mid-April and is also prepared to defend himself in court.

Meanwhile, Sunai Manomaiudom, director-general of the Department of Special Investigation, said Mrs. Pojaman's lawyers had contacted the DSI to appear before the investigators on Tuesday afternoon to acknowledge charges over the alleged concealment of the shareholding structure in SC Assets, part of her familly's huge business empire.

If found guilty, she could face up to eight years imprisonment.

Upon leaving the court house, she was greeting by dozens of cheering supporters.

Pojarman arrived at the Supreme Court at about 11am to face corruption charges after returning to Thailand from Hong Kong this morning.
