Although the dialogue is in English I like to use English subtitles. To keep the volume low.

Fell off my chair laughing at some of the subtitles. Somehow Aushwitze was translated into Oxford along with many other inaccuracies.

Others that I have include Das Boot and saving Pvt Ryan. The English subitles are just as bad.

This seems to happen only when I buy DVD's here in LOS.

Where do they get the guys to do the subtitles. Obviously not native speakers,

To answer the topic question: Yes.

Well when you have Chinese lads trying to translate spoken english to subtitles, I would expect quality to be far below expectations.

The point is that they have been pirated from versions that do not contain sub titles, so the pirates have them done themselves

The Thai sub titles are nonsense also.

Generally, but not always, the later pirated versions carry correct sub titles, but not always, as was obviously the case for your movie.

The only way to be sure is to have them run the movie in the shop, and you can soon tell if the sub titles are kosher or not.

Not so funny when you're hard of hearing.

But I must admit I was in stitches the other night with the crazy subs. I couldn't catch the spoken dialogue, so I kept turning on the subs - but they were no help at all - just made me laugh.

Ah well, not everything is perfect in Paradise.

seriously yeh makes me laugh sometimes but generally when there are subtitles in english i cant help but read them instead of listening properly which then gets on my nerves all the mistakes i see and spoils the film for me a bit.you would have thought they could translate then get a farang to double check ..just an idea

2 types of pirate copies.

a. Direct copies. Everything is the same, but the quality of the film can vary.

b. Subs are normally done electronically, which often translates the sentences directly over.

If not edited, then it shows up like that.

Stopped buying pirate copies years ago. Got tired of either the subs or the poor quality of the films/sounds.

Majestic Suites hotel has a channel showing movies on a loop with bad subtitles.. If you tried to follow the story. it would make no sense.

Perhaps someone could make a living - correcting the subtitles, for the pirates, for an appropriate fee - to be paid in pieces-of-eight ?

This is also often the case with Hong Kong films, even big-budget ones - and I mean the official versions, not pirated ones. The english subtitles leave a lot to be desired......OK, maybe not as bad as mistaking Auschwitz for Oxford, but in many cases the subtitles are a form of entertainment in themselves With HK films part of the problem is that cantonese language is very colloquial/slang and doesn't translate directly into nice subtitle-friendly english and the literal translation may be extremely odd and/or funny - I don't know enough Thai to know, but maybe the same applies to some extent ?
