ahoy there captain, only 50% correct, yes the fares went up, however i was taking a cruise along the mighty khlong saen saep on friday the 11th and the new revised fares were in operation then.

indeed, gold prices rising, dollar rates dropping, 10% fare hike, whats to become of us, where or when will it end i ask myselfbiggrin.gif

The prices went up on the first if I remember correctly. There are notices in Thai posted at all the stops. The notice also states the fare rises for the Jao Phraya ferries.

This is the second Khlong Saen Saep fare rise in 2 years. It used to be 5-15 Baht.

Although this is trivial, have you noticed the price hikes in the supermarkets? I have lived in my house for 18 months, and everything I buy gets consumed within a week or so, so I do not notice.

I like to have a small splash of orange squash (cordial) in the copious gallons of water that I drink everyday as it makes it a bit more interesting. When I moved in we went crazy at the supermarket and filled all the cupboards. The only thing that remains is a bottle of 'tropical fruit' squash that I bought at that time, which I found at the back of the cupboard a few days ago.

Trivial to the extreme, but that bottle was the same price, and same brand as my orange squash. My Orange is now 41 baht, the tropical <deleted> was 34.

Thats a 20.6% rise in 18 months, or roughly 13.75% pa. I am fairly sure that this is across the board as far as 'farang' friendly supermarkets go, but this is my only real evidence, as I do not check the price of everything I buy.

I wonder what would happen to the strengthing baht if this were made public to the financial markets.

Sorry: Inflation is when a nation's currency is depreciating against other currencies because of factors in the economy.

Boats use diesel. Price of oil goes up. Boat prices go up.

Of course don't let the facts stop you from having a good rant / whinge. :o

Who is Adam Smith?

Anyway:

Yesterday's dinner for three: Seafood & pepper with rice, Fried rice with pork, Fried mixed veg over rice, some soup/broth, cost for all those TOGETHER: 45 baht.

Got my car washed: Express service, three guys, under 10 minutes: 40 baht.

Got Truevisions cancelled: It's tripe and overpriced; decent download speeds now mean an unlimited supply of TV that *I* want. First time in history. 1750 or so baht saved.

Domestic flights: Around 1500 baht

Haircut : 70 baht

Massage: 100 baht / hour

Cold Chang beer in my favorite pub: 50 baht

Minor service for the car: engine oil change, lights, brakes, clear air-filter, check & fill battery etc: 510 baht

Someone to clean up my house for a day: 150 baht

Yes, what's the world coming to.

:coffee:

Can't be good if it was that cheap.. :o Also, why only 1 plate for 3 people?

Well; you could always swim down a couple of piers to get the same net price you paid before :D Healthy exercise and frugal too :D

Lilawadee-where can you get your car washed for 40 baht? :o Do they use water? (not khlong San Saep water I hope)

khlong san saeb is a great service and worth every penny - the boats run every few minutes, not like the buses. And there is never a traffic jam - within 30 minutes you are on the ither side of town.

it's the only remaining regular boat service on the khlongs

Do you know anything about economics or are you just speaking rubbish?

Ok, let's take two steps back to the point I was trying to make, but then failed to make properly:

If someone writes 'inflation strikes again', then I take that to mean that the Thai economy is in trouble, with rising prices across the board. I submit that you can't take a commodity such as oil/fuel that is rising in price globally, and then say "See, inflation in Thailand is out of control!" (paraphrasing).

I submit that this is not the case at all, that inflation in Thailand is pretty moderate. En then of course some people on this forum may mistake their own currency going down the drain for inflation in Thailand.

It was actually very good, stunning actually, for the price. I'm sure you've been long enough in Thailand to know that the price of restaurant food in Thailand mostly affects the presentation of the food, the general ambiance of the venue, the location and perhaps the target customer. I find very little impact on the taste/quality of food in the price; in fact it sometimes even seems that some really expensive places only manage very average food, especially Thai food.

Oh and that's three dishes obviously. I may not have the definition of inflation clearly in focus at all times, but I am able to count to three. :o
