Triton 4x4 Engine Swap Question

philipm

Recommended Posts

Yea i was wondering, i have a triton 4x4 3.2gls and well i was thinking if i did an engine swap to a 2j vvti, i understand that the orginal tranmission will have to be swaped out, but what i was wondering is that is it possible to shift into AWD mode? or will all those options be depleted?

thanks....btw does anyone know which garage would be good for doing the swap for the 4x4 triton? reliability, proper installation, safety are all big issues for me....so somewhere which would do a great clean job, and would have the axcels, drive shaft, brakes, etc...for it.

Anyone know how much a full swap like this would cost...i understand most come with the swap itself.

thanks for the help!

hey thanks thailife...where do u get those pics from?

ummm still wondering if anyone can answer my orginal question.

(if by swapping the engine to a 2j or 1j, can i still retain the 4x4 shift mode (changing from LRWD, HRWD and the 4x4 mode)?

Phil,

You will be able to retain your original transfer case and gearbox they will just use a different bell housing to match the engine to your transmission, look at these sites to see what can be done.

I dont know the Englich-names for engine parts so i will call it the "black plastic-pease". The pick with the engine-swap on the blue triton. Why does it say Toyota? They do parts only for the swap or also the original triton have Toyota parts in it?

So, another question to you guys, i was thinking about starting a triton thread but found this one with some trito-experts already so i "highjack" this instead. Now question:

Im looking to buy the Triton plus later this year (still not completely convinced, still have a good eye for the Fortuner but triton seem to fit both me and my wallet better), but i know very little of it. Except for the magazine reviews (wich are all good, and say its the best pickup around pretty much). Ive driven the regular triton many times and i´ve loved it since the first time. The thing why i started to think about the plus is that i live on Samui, very bad roads. I never go offroad but sometimes there is roads (during flooding) where the higher model would be more suitable. I been driving a low car (strada 2.8 gls) for sometime and im mostly ok, but theres that smal idea that it would be a bit more comfortable to have a higher car those few time a year i need it. The thing is, most of our km are on the roadtrips on the mainland. My wife and i are both bikers so in Samui we mainly use the car for the weekly tesco-run and thats it, allthough we now have a baby so the car will be more used in the future. For sure the plus model will suit us better here in Samui, but i guess my real question is: how is it on the roadtrips? I imagine it not being as comfortable as the low model but is it realy bad? Ive driven high tigers on the mainland before and did not like it. The "boat in rough sea"-feeling so to speak. I want to use the Triton plus 3.2 4x4 fourdoorsmodel as a ok island car but most important is still that it do work perfectly smooth on the family roadtrips on the mainland. Any oppinions in this case are welcome. And yes, offcourse im going to try it myself eventually.

Secondly, abit off topic sorry for that, there is somekind of car-auctions in Bangkok where they sell out pretty new cars where the people failed to pay their downpayments. Carcompany take the cars back and auction them out once a week. I´ve heard of some good deals in those places but would like more information.

1:where in Bangkok are they located?

2: How much should i expect to pay on such a market for the car mentioned above not older than 2 years.

3: How long has the Triton plus been around btw? More than a year?

Thankful for any advise.

From the MItsubishi website it looks like they are offering 0% interest, certainly at 15% down and 48 months repayments.

Also, what is the difference with the "Plus" model ?

Plus model for one thing is higher than the regulr triton. Possible there is other differences aswell, i dont know. Anybody?

oh so i still have to have my 4 gears? and the same ratio?

Thats a good point, diesels rev significantly lower and have more torque than their gasoline equivalents. I would assume the gearbox would be changed as well in this case. Anyone know for sure whats the norm?

i would of also thought if i was going for an engine swap would include the transmission, ummm can anyone help. if it is only possible to retain the transmission, what sort of mods would need to be dcone to handle a 280-320bhp motor,,,?

I can't believe a gearbox designed to be mated to a diesel engine to perform properly with a petrol engine powering it.

Shifting points/kick down's are all calculated on the torque curve of the original engine, which will look nothing like the petrol engine's curve!

You'll end up with lot's of dead points, when you depress the throttle but bugger all is happening because your Toyota engine will be too low on revs/torque, but the gearbox thinking there's a diesel engine attached with loads of low rev torque so refuses to switch down a gear!

And the bloody thing will shift up every time your reach 4500 RPM, won't get much acceleration out of your Toyota engine!

Thanks

wouldn't you just change the diff?

hummm...ok all mixed.... so wait, if i chuck a 2j in their, it will have to connected to my disel trans? and if that is the case most the power will be lost due to gear ratios, thus still resulting in having to change the gears ratio...hummmm does anyone know exactly what i can expect or what i am atleast looking at?

btw i saw in 2 mags already their are tritons with the mitsubishi evo engine....saw it mounted inlined if i remember correctly....does anyone have or know any more info on this? i cant read thai....so yea figuring out all the specs and if they managed to make it awd full time or converted the evo trans to be rear wheel drive...and so on :o

Nope, the gearbox will change gears based on the engine rpm, not on the axle speed!

You normally have to change the diff if you change gearbox, since most probably the gear ratio's and end ratio are not the same on a different gearbox. Not much use if your engine's gotta rev at 5000 rpm doing 90kph (prolly will accelerate pretty nifty though :o )

Nowadays gearboxes are controlled by the engine computer, by way of opening/closing solenoid valves on the gearbox making it shift the way the engine computer sees fit.

Unfortunately most gearboxes are different, have different cabling, different type of solenoids, etc. It can be done but often involves modifications on the gearbox, some creative cabling and some reprogramming of the engine computer!

Guess you'll have to change the gearbox as well, and along the way lose your 4WD...

well because if all that needed to be changed was the bell housing and all that, without having to swap the tranmission, u can and will still retain the 4x4 option.

does anyone know how much a simple turbo upgrade kit and ecu would cost?

pllz if anyone knows if putting a 1j or 2j in the 4x4 pickup is it still possible to retain the 4x4 mode(option)
