the way to check fuel consumption is do a "neck to neck", fill the truck right up, drive as far as you want, ( without running out ) then fill it to the neck again and calculate, it wil be more or less spot on,

I thought that was the only way ?

I have no reason to disbelieve Gary but 15km/l is way over what I can get on a run.

The only other way it could be wrong is if the tyres were changed and the odometer was not recalibrated. Then it would read more or less km than actually travelled.

I was reading on a Nissan website that Nissan is the most popular truck in the world particularly in Europe. Has anyone else seen that claim and is it a fact or just wishful thinking?

Looking at a parked Navara, I'm pretty sure I saw vents on the dash for directing forced air to the windshield. Am I correct? I have seen no other truck that has dash vents to de-fog the windshield.

its true im afraid, the european navara is built/assembled in spain and it does out sell all other trucks,ac can be directed on screen,i think nissans probem in thailand was releasing it too late, maybe they had a load of frontiers to dispose of first, funnily enough our neighbors in cambodia will have to pay double almost for a left hand drive navara/pathfinder as its imported from spain,( pathfinder is there now, navara in march ) hence i dont think many will be sold down there at all,.after saying that has anyone else noticed how many landcruisers and lexus there are in cambodia ! im surprised there are any left in the usa ! jeez every other car in phnom penh is a lexus ,...

I saw in the Bangkok Post that all pickup sales were down in Thailand EXCEPT the Navara. It's sales were up 43 or 48 percent. I don't remember for sure.

Get a Ford Ranger. Nissans, Toyotas, Mitsubuishi's etc are all cheap rubbish that won't last, plus the drivers of those fortuner things are idiots :o

Ford ranger sells the least of the lot, i wonder why ? :D

The reason being that Ford is more expensive than crappy <deleted> you'd buy :D

Really ? <deleted> ? i dare you to start a vigo ranger topic !i dont buy on price, why pay superior money for an inferior product !, and thats not based on my assumtion, but on sales figures,. where you got your idea from god knows !,its a mazda anyway, but as im in the accessory business i stick to what sells, the ford is not a good seller full stop, dont beleive me? take look at the figures, personally i have nothing against it and wouldnt go as far as to call it <deleted> such as you have done to me, however il think of it as little knowledge is dangerous,. :D

Do they have more 'knobs' in a vigo then?

On a run to Jomtien, Gary will travel 500 Kms without hiting really heavy traffic, if driven carefully there is no reason why a normally aspirated, non Turbo empty pick up will not get that figure, I have done the same trip at 12.8 Kms per litre average in a Fortuner.

It's only upon hitting the Traffic hel_l of Chonburi or Bangkok that the major traffic starts.

Almost back on topic: the corporate ownership of Isuzu by GM is meaningless. Best modern car I have enjoyed was a cheap, late model, domestic Chevrolet! GM seems genetically unable to make American cars that people born after 1940 will buy.

You guys and your big engines that get over 11 km per liter make me sick! My Nissan NV 1.6 never gets 10.0. And yes, filling up neck to neck is reliable, even for one set of fill-ups, if you can get the attendant to fill it all the way. And, driving all the way in overdrive, slowly without goosing it, will get you good mileage. So my grandmother used to believe, but I don't drive like she did.

As far as my Nissan fuel economy, I'll leave it at this. I'd be happy to take a wager to prove it. The truck is 100 percent as it came from the factory, no tire changes and has only been back to the dealer for normal service. If you're sure I'm wrong, why not take a wager? Besides that, you'll get a free trip to Jomtien in addition to winning a bet.

The fuel consumption of pickup trucks has been discussed on TV already, and there's nothing new to add, really.

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=74096

No one could claim the same number as Gary, not in any kind of pickup truck, not in real life driving.

Two other comments about Nissans were "really thirsty" and "10km/l", which sounds about right for the old, phased out techonology and big engines.

Back in 2004 15km/l was way out of the normal range for pickup trucks, that's why I find it hard to believe. Also the fact that no one else has even mentioned that Nissan had a record fuel saving engine, and also the fact that if true, it would mean that Nissan itself dropped it in favor of engines that reduced fuel consumption by 30%.

The first truck to lay claims to superior economy was Isuzu 2.5 iTec which was introduced about the same time and was specifically geared for economy . The technology was two generations ahead of Gary's Nissan, the engine a lot smaller, and still it's difficult to get 15km/l in real life driving.

It just doesn't check out.

Anyway, as far as modern Nissans go, they appear to be fuel thirsty comparing to Gary's old truck, but should be ok comparing to Isuzus. That's what the thread is about, isn't it? Buying new trucks.

These pickups, being only inline 4's with diesel engines, will get much better mileage than a lot of cars here. However, the mileage claims made in the ads are laughable at best. Getting 17 km/liter on the highway isn't being realistic; who's going to drive at 60kph?

With the simple drivetrain setup of pickups and the reliability of diesel engines, you can do alright be getting a truck with soft suspension which provides a more "car like" ride. I find the 4X4 Ford Ranger to be quite uncomfortable...the thing feels like a skateboard, whereas the Vigo I went in gave a nicer ride.

Nissan increased its sales by 25% last year.

Navarra has been there bread and butter, there must be something good about it. In the mean time Isuzu sales shrank by 10%.

They really really need the new truck or risk losing their top spot forever and reducing themselves to competing with second tier trucks instead.

My Nissan Navara is at my local dealer where I purchased it from for a change of engine oil pump. Apparently the earlier built ones were fitted with sub standard oil pumps- according to head technician at the dealer. They informed me of this at the 10,000 km service. Anyway in now, but a 5 hour job, so had to rely on a friend to pick me up etc, as I did not fancy a long wait at garage.. No cost to myself as done on warranty and for some odd reason they are going to rotate the tyres too. Its only done 11,500 kms, I just said 'go ahead'.

I heard some tales of poor service at up country Nissan dealerships, but cannot fault mine so far, they always phone my wife to ask if I was happy with the service etc and the girl who brings you the coffee in the waiting area is always worth chatting up!!.

Hi phutoie2

I'd check the tyre pressures too afterwards, cos Thais are notorious for over-inflating car tires cos they think it saves benzine. My brand new car was delivered with 50psi all round!!!!!

Thanks for that Dave, made me laugh! reminds me of when I was in the British Army, on a vehicle inspection, the Officer asked the young soldier why the tread on his landrover tyres was so worn?

The young sapper replied 'Don't know sir, only just inflated them this morning!!.

I have a good question about Nissan.

What Nissan do so wrong /what is so bad in Nissan that its not popullar in asia, europe, middle east,usa..

Really..ITS JUST NOT (!).

Why?

They just have to learn to make cars people want at a good price. Not so easy when you have Toyota and Hoda trying to do exactly the same.

>dont beleive me? take look at the figures,<

Purchased mine in June 2007, its a two wheel drive King cab LE. I had over 10,000 kms trouble free driving and very pleased with it. As I said in post, I only became aware of this when at the 10,000 km service they had it up on the ramp and were checking underneath.

Certainly worth having a Thai friend/wife/girlfriend to speak to your local dealer. (If your Thai language skills are like mine!)

Collected mine from the dealer yesterday, no charge for the work but 500 baht for wheel rotation/balancing.

They also carried out another oil change due to change of oil pump etc and reset the service indicator again
