Warranty On A 1 Year Old Second Hand Car ?

Hello,

I think about to buy a quite new but second hand car in Thailand.

The Nissan Navara for example has a factory warranty of 3 years. If I would buy such 1 year old car, would I get the rest warranty of 2 years or this factory warranty is related only to the first owner who buy the car new from the dealer ?

Thx Bagsida

I'm thinking of the same thing as you.

Interested in where you think is the best place to look for such a vehicle. Ads? Auctions? Dealers?

Yepp - That´s why I am interested in the warranty regulations in Thailand.

Auctions .....I am not shure you can buy it cheap because the Thais want to "win", so the price go up and up....may be Ads...but where or dealers, but in BKK only....or fund a "community" see my post here :

The "specialist" (tuner, dealer, car rental) from different forums not like speak about these things for can make their own "business" I think.

I was going to buy a second hand vehicle with 43,000 kilometers on the odometer. I noticed the driver's side seat showed some wear. I looked in the glove box and it was empty. When I asked about the warranty the salesman told me 30 days. I asked where the dealer service book was and got the Thai blank look. "NO HAVE". It's hard telling how many kilometers it had on it but you can bet the odometer was turned back. If a year old vehicle has no service book, forget it. I ended up buying new because you simply can't trust second hand car dealers.

the story is not finished and will be continued soon.

That´s why now I think about buy a second hand car again - shure only would buy a 1 year old car incl. all paperworks and shure I would call the customer service of the manufacturer for ask about the details of the car (vehicle identification number).

What about buying from a farang who can produce a documented service history? Presumably that would go some way to avoid commercial sharp practice and bad maintenance. There are ads of this sort on Thai Visa frequently enough.

Assuming the vehicle is ok, is there a rule of thumb on how much the price should come down in say the first year or two? Ad what sort of mileage would be common/reasonable per year of usage?

Obviously if the discount is no more than say 10% I'd also go for the new vehicle.

Of course if you knew me and knew I bought my truck new last June and I was selling and you were buying then you could be assured of a good vehicle with service history and legit mileage.

Of course if there were consumer protection laws and the one year discount was 30%+ then you'd be queuing up for 2nd hand vehicles.

It is usually safe to buy from someone you know or someone who has the service documents for the vehicle. If the vehicle is still under warranty, you can be sure the mechanical condition is good. At that point you must check carefully to see if it has had any major accidents. After a vehicle has been hit hard, they are usually never the same particularly if the frames was damaged. I'm always amazed with the decent looking vehicles that are going sideways down the highway. (dog tracking). Replacement suspension parts are usually VERY inferior junk.

.....If the vehicle is still under warranty, you can be sure the mechanical condition is good. ......

And exactly this is the question I am still waiting for an answer :

All I heard about 2nd hand car is, that the warranty is 1 month - I think this is for older cars, but

is there a factory warranty on a 2nd hand car if the factory gives warranty for more than 1 year or not.

The warranty and the insurance already on the vehicle will be transfered to the new owner.

Wouldn't the car papers tell you how many owners it had had?

So what is the usual discount here on a 12-18 mth old vehicle with average mileage?

The remainder of a factory/new car warranty is transferable to the new owner, some dealers charge an admin fee to put the warranty in your name, its the vehicle, not the buyer that has the warranty,.

february 15, second hand car show starts called Rot Di, Rot Den; behind seacon square, organized by the nation, in cooperation with some big names. Think those cars all get warranty and have been fully checked. It's part of a program to improve second hand car image...
