Had a nice evening at a place called The Riverside (?) last night. Good beer, and Thai singers. The lake is great for kids of any age. Not much traffic weekdays, not sure about weekends. Just before you hit the lake there is a long track ideally suited for bikes that pretty much follows the entrance. A good places to ride a bike and not worry about vehicles is located on the west side about 2km left of the entrance. Now the back road (to Doi Pui road) is paved all around. Hey now, I was just the first of any who might have said it, and am one of those most often out there to offer advice. No problem with that at all. But come on, same page there was a thread about top whatever things to do in CM. Same idea. You were a sitting duck. If not me...anyway... My own two cents' worth: Go have a drink at The Riverside and catch a band and mingle with a good mix of Farang and Thais having a good time there. Also it's a bastion of CM life. We've all spent a night or two there living it up..or whatever it is you do there. If you like to dance go hit up 'Bubble' the newly refurbished dance hole under/ beside the Pornping Hotel. It's fun and almost or definitely sleezy depending what you make of it. But fun in groups or even as a couple as you can people watch galore. Do catch a Khantoke Dinner with a combo Lanna Food and Music/Dance show. You can go bottom of the barrel CM Cultural Center for like 150B or something. Not sure. Or go Khum Kantoke, the biggest over-the-top show that only an Asian extravaganza mentality could pull off. Really quiite a nice night and something to see once. It's about 600B. If you like nature go take a moto up to Samoeng by following the canal road and then heading right up into the mtns to the left of Doi Suthep. There's a whole loop thing you can do, but I usually just go up and get into the country air, stop n have a bite at a roadside stall, and find a park or somehwere to walk around. Within 30 mins of the city you are surrounded by country folk, chickens in the road, and friendly smiles, if not gawking at the Farang who must be lost to be up there. So there's all that there. And not in the other threrad 'cause I had the tiniest twinge of guilt. But really, if I ever came down hard on ppl, it would be clear. I do believe in the search function and the power of the TV community to pull together and get good info out there. And it works - as it is rt now in the thread I posted about doing a Vientianne Visa run for my friend. Careful, I think I might pm you to be over for that beer! Hey also... I know some of the better restaurants in town. let me know what you wanna eat and we can look into it. I know some owners too....some too secret to mention here! Many folks who travel forget this and busy themselves looking for non-touristy things to do or see. There is a reason for different venues becoming tourist attractions; beautiful and enjoyable, culturally stimulating, etc. Please don't miss them just because they are 'for tourists.' Take some day tours. While these may be the pinnacle of tourism they became such because they take you to places that are interesting to see, and give you a wide variety of them in one day. You can always go back and spend more time at one you especially enjoy. I get a lot of clients who ask me to take them to photograph places where the tourists never go. That's easy; down back sois in small villages, to Makkro, the library. There is a reason tourists don't go there. There is nothing of great interest to see. Might be different from home, but so is Doi Suthep. Makkro might be different from your local big box store, but not nearly as culturally stimulating as the Water Buffalo Training Center in Mae Rim or the Sainamphung Orchid Nursery. I love to wander down back streets to see the 'real life' of a town, but having that back street lead to the Wararote Market is very different from having it lead to the local land fill. Ask at the tour desks. Ask at a tour desk for several different day's activities. Chose those that interest you. Are you here for Nature? For Culture? Shopping for Celedon or Silk? There are plenty of bars and clubs to fill your evenings, just like back home. But the Kantoke Dinner Show isn't found in Kentucky. Neither is Simon's Dream Cabaret. They can fill your evenings too, and be a Thai experience rather than a Chicago experience that you have in Thailand. Have fun, play safely, but don't lose sight of the fact that you are in a very different culture with incredible sights to see and wonderful things to experience. Top reply Went to The Riverside and last night went to Mandalay. Not bad singers but why oh why do Thai dj's play awful hip-hop...What about a bit of house music Might try Khum Kantoke (sp) tonight. Zoo was ok, bit run down in places and I'm not a big fan of animals walking around "cells". Quite interesting to see the panda's and koala's. It just shows to go ya how often I get out at night other than to play music .... I haven't even passed that location since Rimping closed down there.
