How To Make Oz Pc User Friendly For Thai Wife

Featured Replies

My Thai wife recently obtained a Spouse Visa for Australia and we'll be returning there on Thursday 20th March from BKK.

I have a PC at home with a normal English Windows ME system as well as Micro Office. (Yes, I know I should upgrade the ME!!)

Can I just purchase a recent edition of Micro Office Thai version and instal this and will this follow through to emails?

I have already purchased a dual language keyboard, thus will my system change between Thai and English by keying the top/left button under "ESC" as one does in the Internet Cafes?

Thanks in anticipation.

No-one ever configured or know how to make a PC do 2 languages, Thai & English?

install the fonts and buy a dual language keyboard

You may find that your wife will use your computer more than you do. (or at those times when you really need to use it yourself.) In that regard you may wish to consider buying a second computer for her exclusive use.

I had to and both computers are connected to the internet via a router.

I assume that you are connected to the internet.

My better half spends quite a bit of time reading the Thai newspapers on-line. She then goes into her Thai cooking pages and prints out various recipes. She also sends money to her family back in LOS through internet banking and chats to her friends with microphone via on-line connections.

We use Windows XP English and she has adapted to it quite well. Win XP can be programmed to recognize Thai fonts. As all her emails are written in English, she has no need for a Thai keyboard.

If Windows ME will allow you to read Thai writing on-line, then she should be quite happy using your computer in Oz.

More likely nobody can remember how to do it with Win ME :o

Consider getting a box with more grunt and installing Win XP, full language packs (including making the menus etc. work in Thai) are available.

Crossy,

Where you say the Language Packs, are they already in XP or supplied separately?

They are there , but have to be selected and installed

Pretty sure the stuff needed to display and type various foreign languages come with XP SP2 as standard, if not they are available for free download from Microsoft.

If you want the user-interface (menus etc.) in Thai drop me a PM, I have the Thai MUI pack for XP (not a free download). This allows you to set the UI language by user, so if you log on it's in English, if your lady logs on it's in Thai.

Much appreciated Crossy,

Flying out from BKK to Oz in a couple of days, I'll sort things out at home and see what's needed and get back to you.
