My dog has problems, he is too quiet, he could be in pain and I dont know.

The Vet on the ring road opposite the post office is the only Vet I know in Samui

and I am not impressed.

He gave my Dog 2 needles when he was one year for something, he said for ticks and health, but his whole stomach and chest became very red like blood coming to the surface and he was in pain, could not pick him up for 5 days,

I have a feeling this Vet has damaged my Dogs heart, he is only 2 years and a Shitzu, they are fragile dogs and probably should not even be in tropical places like Thailand, I keep him in the aircon when its hot.

Does anyone know a real Vet, should I go to Phuket or Pataya or even Bangkok to find a real Vet?

Ohh and by the way, I left my Dogs at the Dog Father when I went away last time, very impressed with that place, expensive but well worth it.

hi

from what you describe your dog could have tick born disease, a blood parasite called babesia which causes anaemia, inner bleedings and weakness. check his gums, they should be pink but not pale or too red, did your dog have ticks?

it could also be a reaction on the ivermec injection.

try the animal hospital roo is talking about, the lady vet there is excellent and saved some of my rescued dogs lives.

Great thanks for the Info, he had a couple of ticks every now and then, but we just pulled them off, i am sure the heads were still inside, i know now what to do it they get ticks, i dont pull them off, i spray the area with tick spray and the next day the tick is gone and dies completely instead of leaving the head inside.

Sounds like you know what your talking about, so therefore ill go to that animal hospital and get him checked out and ask about what that needle was and if it has effected him, wonder if they have a cardio machine to check animals hearts, my last dog in Australia had a heart murmer died age 8 nothing they could do, so now i am worrried about this one.

Totally agree about the Animal Hospital. Have had nothing but good experiences there.

Cheers.

hi dingojoe, important is that you prevent any ticks from biting your dog. once they have sucked the blood they already put the parasite into the dog, even if they fall off afterwards... a drop on is a good choice and as you said to spray the beddings and surroundings of your dog. after a while you will eradicate any ticks in your house. but still your dog can get new ones from outside, so a drop on sometimes is the best idea. depends if you live or walk your dog in tick infested areas.

there is no cardio machine at the vets here, as far as i know. dr somsak has a x-ray machine. profound examination and tests are still a problem here unfortunately.

good luck

Hi Elfe,

Thanks for the post, could you explain what you mean by drop on. I have a small poodle/shitsu mix and he constantly has ticks, I,ve tried tick shampoo, tick spray, tick powder, a medication from the animal clinic which incidently is really good and just cannot seem to get rid of the ticks.

Thanks

hi dcs,

drop-on is a liquid you put on 3-4 spots at the skin on the back of your dog. it is just some drops hence the name. it repells ticks and also kills ticks which are already on your dog after some hours. at the vet they sell it under the name frontline, i use a cheaper thai brand as i got so many dogs.

Hi Elfe

Could you let me have the name of the Thai brand and where I can obtain it? I have used Frontline which is good but rather expensive.

Thanks, Gator

Elfe,

The vet told me that the heart worm injection also controls tics. I get mine done every 2 months, no tics.

right, the injection is ivermec which kills all mites, ticks, flea and heartworm larvae which feast on the dog's blood. for heartworm protection it is good every two months, as the heartworm larvae can be killed in the first two months of its existance in the blood without doing much harm to the dog . for ticks etc it only works one or two weeks.

Yes, we have the same experience . For tick protection the Ivermec seems to wear off quite quickly. But the places where the dogs hang out seems to make a difference. The long grasses seem to harbour the ticks which seem to consist of two

types; big fat ones and small crablike ones. I don't think that they are related. No problem with removing them, just use tweezers dipped in very hot water.

the big fat ones are the ones who sucked blood already on your dog and are now full of eggs to hatch in about 15 days. that is why you have to do tick prevention every 15 days the least, otherwise you will never get rid of them.

the fat ones hide in some place and after two weeks the eggs hatch and tiny ticks come out of them, can hardly see with naked eye, rather when they are 'full' after a few days... then they fall off the dog and hide and become the 'crab' like ones which you saw.

they are all one big family :o

google ivermectin toxicity, i used to sell the produck in the UK, we were told by the makers ( MSD at that time now Merial) no way was it to be used on dogs. to my knowledge heartworm is not a problem in the UK. i asked my vet about using ivermectin for parasite control and he said no it can kill the dog. we used to sell it to pig and dairy farmes. i just took in a puppy of the street as it was nearly dead i will be very reluctant to let it have any Ivermec.

maybe Ivomec is a nessacary over here for the heartworm.

check out website below, this could be your dogs problem

people in Samui on most subjects.

thanks

i use ivermec on all my dogs every two months since many years. never a problem, apart from allergic reactions on 3 of them after injection, which showed swelling of face, red spots on the skin and itching. gone after about 2 hrs. this might also be a reaction of some ingredient in the ivermec solution, not of the ivermec itself.

never say never, it is surely not healthy as any other chemical you put in or on your dog isn't.

flea, mites and ticks we can prevent with other methods but for heartworm there isn't.

heartworm is a killer, if the grown worm block the heart there is nothing you can do. after detecting heartworm in your dog (usually because fast breathing, easy exhaust, tiredness) it is very hard to get them killed and out of the dogs heart and the treatment for that is very risky for the life of dog.

the breeds stated in the link above should not be treated with ivermec as well as all puppies below 4-5 months.

the only other prevention you could do is to keep your dog from being bitten by a mosquito, which surely is not easy and not possible..
