Is there a western digital repair center here in bangkok? or at least a drop off place?

Greg

AFAIK you can contact any of WD distributors listed here:

http://www.selectwd-ap.com/MainCtrl?operat...&country=TH

even if your drive doesn't have a sticker from them.

However if you need data from the drive this is not a way to go.

Ok thanks a lot. by any chance do you know of any data recovery companies as well? would be nice to get the data back ;-)

WD Factory is located at Bang Pa In near Ayudhaya. If you have important data to recover, you'll need to go there.

Cheers.

They do not do data recovery there - its an assembly plant. Best to contact a local company in BKK to do it for you - Pantip?

or

Depending upon the value of the data and your own pc knowledge you can do it yourself (and save thousands of baht) if you have a spare hard disk where you can copy recovered data to, loads of applications available, best is SPINRITE - v6 is the latest

Because that's all the "pro data recovery" Companies will use!!

I've used it for years since its launch. Always happy with results, depending upon the damage.

You have to be realistic, if your Hard Disk was struck by lightning or fell down a lot of stairs after a DR Chang guidance meeting then you can basically forget it and just bite the bullet and buy new HD's.

Ultimately If you don't have backups of data - then more fool you - you'll learn from the experience!!!

I hate to be glib, but the trash bin is about the best service you can provide a Western Digital drive. Their quality has simply not kept up with the other major drive manufacturers. I used to use WD drives but stopped due to their poor performance and reliability.

You're right but from personal experiences they do some "repairs" or better let say Data Recovery. I had a few customers HDD from WD with were not more working but I've need the data. Was going to the factory and asked friendly for help and they done the job, even free for me. I was getting the needed Data and that was what I had need.

Cheers.

I know someone who has a data recovery facility {which now focuses on commercial data management & forensic security, rather then the general public} here in Bangkok and there are a few points to note here. Spin-Right and other software data tools will not recover data from a disk which has suffered a physical failure. In Thailand, perhaps owing to the level of air-borne contaminants, most drives here fail physically, not logically, and so may need to be disassembled in a suitable environment {clean room}.

If a drive has physically failed, using a software package to recover data may in fact cause more damage. A professional data recovery operation doesn't use such tools but interrogates the drive at a low level often using tools provided by the specific manufacturer for that purpose.

Lastly the cost of data recovery is high, especially in baht terms compared to other costs here, so backup backup backup.

That has been my experience too.

I won't touch their products with a barge pole. :o
