SOURCE: Pattaya City News: May 13th 2008

South Korean Tourist caught with 2 packets of Marijuana by Tourist Police.

Undercover Tourist Police Officers conducted an arrest of a South Korean Man on Walking Street in the early hours of Tuesday Morning.

He was caught in possession of two packets of the class 5 drug Marijuana. Mr. Moon Soojin aged 35 was taken to Pattaya Police Station and charged with possession of a class 5 drug. Mr. Moon confessed to purchasing the two packets for 1,000 Baht from a Thai Man on Walking Street.

Further investigations are now taking place relating to the drug dealer who Tourist Police hope to catch within the next 24 hours based on a description of the man given to Police by the Korean.

absolutely amazing with all the thai men swarming around trying to sell "ganja" that they would

have nabbed the one korean national? maybe they mistook him for a thai? maybe the thai pusher

pointed him out to the tourist police? maybe the tourist police themselves are selling? :o

There are very obvious drug pushers on Walking Street carrying packets of cigarettes and whispering "marijuana" to everyone who walks past. There's no way their activities have escaped the police's attention.

Drug offenses, especially in Thailand, are extremely severe. That last section of the beach road path before

walking street is where they all hang-out. Every night, undisturbed, approaching tourists with their ganja,

ganja, coke, coke, something, something sales pitch. But they never get arrested do they? Very strange. :o

This is what the tourist police are for isn't it? Setting up foreign tourists for extremely lucrative drug busts. Just to make sure the sting went well, they ensured that by selling him the drugs themselves.

Similar operations operate in Samui and on Khao San. I am not advocating the use of drugs. I am pointing out how the police are enriching themselves rather than making any effort to prevent very open drug dealing in a major tourist area.

What are the likely penalties? I presume a fine rather than jail?

Is it better to get nabbed by Thai police than tourist police? I always presumed you could just pay Thai police off with a healthy bribe.
