Was recently prompted to install the latest free upgrade of AVG free 8.0 and altho I've always been pleased by the simplicity and unobtrusiveness of the older versions for years, this new version seems to be causing a slowdown of my pc. During the upgrade procedure they gave me an option of installing the yahoo search engine with the avg toolbar and i declined, but they gave it to me anyway and I think that is causing the slowdown.

can that be?? and how can I rid myself of the yahoo search engine?? and still run the AVG antivirus?? or is this the price that I have to pay for free??

Hard to believe that no one is using AVG free! If you are, you will get an upgrade notice soon as the old version expires on may 31. then tell me what happens to your computer.

It slows down during the virus sweep, especially the first 5 -10 minutes. Yes , it is more noticable than the last version.

I have got no yahoo search engine, google is my default, no avg bar installed either. Had to get used to the new version, but now i am, set the times for updating and scanning, checked if it really did scan mail. Well it does all of that and i am happy with it, i am not a speed freak anyway.

Maybe you can uninstall the things you donot want on the control page.

Installed my update a couple of weeks back and can't say I've noticed any slowing down. The schedule scan is very slow, but this is adjustable in the settings.

All in all I'm pleased with it

Any idea on how to disable the yahoo search toolbar?? As, I'm sure that is what is in conflict with my google search toolbar.

Tried their info and didn't find anything.

You should be able to get rid of the toolbar via the Add/Remove programs

I thought Grisoft stopped supporting the free edition of AVG a while ago (Feb 2007?)

I installed AVG 8 and chose to install the Toolbar by mistake. To get rid of it, re-install AVG 8, without unistalling your current copy. In the installation process, choose the Add/Remove Components option. It will then ask you to choose which components you want to retain. When it shows the Toolbar option, ensure that the box is unchecked.

It worked for me. The Toolbar and Yahoo Search facility is gone.
