Hey TV I'm running this past the forum in the hopes that some one will know.

I'm thinking of picking up a PS3 in the states on my annual leave back there in July.

From some information that I've piece together the PS3's games do not have regions. So if I buy a disk here or there it will work just fin on the player.

I'm looking at the 40GB model Retail Configurations Wikipedia

Does that mean that it's both NTSC and PAL or you get an either or model?

Even if the one i pick up in the states is NTSC it should work fine on a multi system TV right?

Does a US PS3 have duel voltage? will it run natively on 110-120, 210-220 Voltage?

and the last question: am I silly to buy this thing in the states? should I pick it up in BKK or Singapore?

Can BKK or Singapore match or beat the US$400 price tag?

Not in High Def as far as I'm aware, the biggest NTSC/PAL problem was the different resolutions they used, 720p is 1280x720 all across the world.

Although PS3 games ARE region encoded, or at least some of them. I'd buy one over here, they are pretty cheap nowadays.

So if you buy GTA4 over here it might not work on a US machine or Vice versa?

I don't currently have a TV with HDMI so I'd be caming with component, so I shouldn't have any resolution problems right?

I probably also need to shop around more for the price on the PS3. just asking (no price haggling yet) the asking price at one store here was double that of what it should cost in the states.

any one know what the going rate is for one in BKK (40GB model) ??? I think I might get it cheaper there than here in Phuket. or if some one could offer a good place in phuket to pick on up.

Check out www.nadzproject.com, if you want to buy one from bangkok. They are about 13,500 baht now for a 40gig, so that's about $400 dollars anway, isn't it? I got mine from there, great service.

As for the games, they are not region encoded, well I think some are, but only a handful. I have loads of games from region 1 2 and 3 and they all work fine (gta 4 from uk works fine on my asian system).

Thanks for the heads up cowman1 BKK seems the easier option and it's a hel_l of a lot closer too.

any price difference is negligible when it's that close

No worries,

If you get one, and you get online feel free to add me - psn: Thaicowman.

I've just checked again and it's actually 14800 (i'm sure it was cheaper before) but still less hassle than getting it from the states I guess. The shop is very near a sky train stop, chong nonsi i think.

I want to get one to but if I do;

- 1150 on speed dial

- air con running 24/7

- wife will leave me

- dog will go hungry

- bills will pile up in the mailbox

- will get bruises on my thumbs

- not shave or shower anymore

- hang around in my boxer shorts all day :o

More seriously,

To the op, get one here....much better! For service, also to avoid any "misunderstandings" at customs and less hassle. My questions are;

1. Do you need the original games for online gaming?

2. What is the Hdmi 1.3 console all about?

I would get it just for the following games, Gran turismo....Grand theft auto 4, Oblivion....what other good games are there?

1. AFAIK the PS3 does not currently have a mod-chip/can play backup games, hence no original disk, no dice.

2. Wikipedia has got a nice little write up on what HDMI 1.3 means and what it's got over previous versions.
