Roundup

Featured Replies

Hi,

just a few questions regarding weedkillers.

I normally buy the Monsanto Roundup in the 4litre/1 gallon bottle, for the past few years I have been paying between 550/600 baht. I went to buy some today (600 baht 2 months ago!) and the price has shot up to between 950 and 1050 baht! I am in chiang Mai - any of you guys getting it at better rates?

Secondly - does anyone know where I can buy it in larger quantities, hopefully to reduce the price per litre - maybe 50 / 100 litre barrels?

Lastly - failing any of the above, any suggestions on an alternative, I need to kill off that long sharp grass (grows over 3 metres - looks like giant lemon grass) and some rather vicious thorny creeper.

I had heard that you can make your own using vinegar/salt/soap liquid - but I also heard that this can sterilize the soil for months or even years!!!

Many thanks

Glyphosphates are probably the safest weedkillers around at the moment, you must have a very large area or you are mixing it to strong to use that much.I go through 1 litre a year on 10 rai.

The grass you describe sounds like the grass that is used to make roof thatch, it is hard to eliminate and is better dug out .

Roundup is a systemic weedkiller and if mixed properly should take a week before the tops brown off ,if they brown off to quickly the plant cant pass the poison down to the roots for a total kill and so will regenerate. Roundup is one of those chemicals where to little is better than to much in the mix ratio.

LOL -

I have a serious grass/weed problem!

The mixture is around 200ml / 20 litres water - coverage is approximately 60 litres per rai (so 600ml roundup concentrate per rai) based on 20 rai, works out about 12 litres of concentrate, and it doesn't always kill first hit, some of the areas take a second or third hit to clear.

The problem seems to be as fast as you clear the bad grass, a new weed appears after the rains, you get rid of the new weeds, and the grass starts again.

When we bought the land about 7 years or so ago it was completely covered in huge spiky weeds ( about 10 feet high) you could not even walk through it.

This was cleared and the thick grass then appeared, this grows to about 3 metres high and if left unchecked needs a tractor to clear it.

I am eventually beating it back now, but the cost of roundup is getting silly.

I was thinking of trying a giant kind of gas blowtorch ( my family used to have an old paraffin kind of flamethrower thing about 30 years ago - not seen anything here in Thailand??)

Most of the worst grass has gone already, but a new infestation of this spiked creeper has now started - the problem with this stuff is once it gets a hold, you cannot cut it with the normal Thai grass cutters, it ravels and stalls even a 6.5hp engine...so I need to get rid of it ASAP.
