The normal email attachment limit is 10 MB. I want to send a single 1 GB (1000 MB) home-movie MPEG. Will any providers handle this, can the file be broken up, or should I just mail a DVD to the recipient? Thanks.

I do believe that will be an problem!

If you can't sent to an private Mail-Server with unlimited attachment settings, it will be impossible.

But you can use an VPN service for to upload directly to the receivers computer. That service is provided by DynDNS.com or No-IP.com for example while I use the service from No-IP.com for instance. That would be also usefull if you need to send often something to the same receipient. I use this service for remote control as well and it works exellent. And you don't need an fixed IP for that service!

Cheers.

Thanks. Is it Pando free to receive or does the remote party need to pay for a license as well?

Use the free version at both ends. Max 1gb file attachment. I've had the free version for years, and it really is good.

What I like about YouSendIt is that it isn't reliant on email servers to transport the file data. The recipient (the person who you want to send the file to) receives an email with a link they click on and the download happens via http, thus removing the email client (with its inherent limitations) from the equation.

NOTE: YouSendIt is free for files up to 100 MB -- no registration required. You'll need to go with the Pro (pay) version which allows file sizes up to 2 GB.

If you have a webpage upload the file, password protect the page, and then the receiver can download it.

for an easy life burn the 1Gb file to DVD :o

--------------

for a slightly more technical solution download 7zip and split the file up into 100Mb - 250Mb chunks. (right click, add to archive)

then use this upload service to upload the chunks...

http://www.uploadjockey.com

it will upload your files to a handful of download services, saving you the hassle if one stops working another one will work fine!

uploading will take time and at 30KB/s 100Mb would take an hour! Don't even attempt this in an internet cafe!

Lots of ways you can do this. Email probably the very worst. Even if your ISP(s) allow it, the chances of failed downloads/timeouts etc and other problems are numerous. File upload/download, file sharing solutions like the ones suggested much better.

Buy yourself a memory stick if you need to move files a lot. A 4GB Kingston drive will set you back around 600THB or less - much quicker, easier, cheaper than burning DVDs. If you need even more space get a portable USB hard disk (I like the Western Digital Passport drives - slim, pocket sized).

FolderShare is another possible web-based solution. Main use is to sync files/folders on remote machines, but you can just install it on a single machine and then access any files on that machine from any remote machine. Has saved my hide many a time.

If you do upload and then download the file use a download assistant like GetRight so that a network hiccup won't mean you've wasted hours of time and hundreds of MBs of bandwidth.

VNC and similar remote destop tools usually have file transfer capabilities. Need to install and setup client and server apps, but not that complex. I wouldn't recommend transfer a file of that size though.

How to send "big" attachements?

1. There are a lot of free "File Sharing" providers like Pando.

+ Doesn't clog up your email download (try to download your GMail's and you cannot read the other

25 before the one with a 1GB attachement is downloaded).

- Can be fairly slow on download.

- Some "File Sharing" Site's can hang at the last 15KB, forcing you to wait a certain time before you

can try to download again.

Personal opnion:

Best to avoid, only in rare cases.

2. The Memory Stick / Memory card.

+ 1GB Memory Stick / Memory Card are fairly cheap and a Memory card can be glued in a letter.

Bigger sizes (2GB up to 8GB are also on the market now for affordable prices.

Almost no additional freight costs if a Memory Card (SD or similar) is used.

If you trust the receiver, he can send you the Memry Card back with Photo's or whatever

(= recycle).

- Depending on the place where you have to send it to, the delivery time can be 1 week or more.

Personal opinion:

I use this solution since about 1 year and got most of my memory card back filled with photo's,

software, and other things. Very good solution.

3. If the recipient is in a hurry and the recipient can BE THRUSTED (supposing that you run Windows XP), create a "Shared Folder" with the recipient from within Windows Messenger and put the file in there. As soon as the recipipent will log in to Microsoft Messenger, the file will start to download.

+ very fast download if both have an ADSL connection.

No upload time required.

The recipient can stop the donwload any time and resume where he left when he logs in.

- Not to be used with people you dont thrust.

Personal opinion:

I use this solution to share photo's with my family and close friends abroad, and put many times files from 1GB and bigger in the shared folder. I also download many times files from the shared folders

abroad.

Very fast and if I want to stop the download and resume afterwards, it is very easy.

Hope this helps
