I hope your friend got away OK.

I'd be curious to know how "Plort" sounded.

A bit tricky transcription :o

ปลอดภัย could be the answer

Allow me to offer several suggestions that are a bit beyond the initial subject. In any event, the traveler has likely departed already. The following are several traditional Thai offerings for a safe journey:

1. ขอให้คุณพระศรีรัตนตรัย และสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ทั้งหลายจงดลบันดาลให้เดินทางโดยสวัสดิภาพ

KhaawR haiF khoonM phraH seeR ratH taL naH traiM laeH singL sakL sitL thangH laayR johngM dohnM banM daanM haiF deernM thaangM dooyM saL watL tiL phaapF

May the Triple Gem and all the powers that exist in the world grant you a safe journey.

2. ขอให้เดินทางโดยสวัสดิภาพและขอให้ประสบความสำเร็จในทุกๆด้านนะครับ

khaawR haiF deernM thaangM dooyM saL watL tiL phaapF laeH khaawR haiF bpraL sohpL khwaamM sahmR retL naiM thookH thookH daanF naH khrapH

I wish you a safe journey and that you will achieve success in everything that you do.

3. ขอให้เดินทางด้วยความปลอดภัยครับ

KhaawR haiF deernM thaangM duayF khwaamM bplaawtL phaiM khrapH

I hope that you have a safe journey.

I'm sure that there are other variations on these themes. Does anyone else have some other suggestions?

my guest has left and he was pleasantly surprised that this time i wished him in thai instead of english (normally i'd have said "have a safe trip. jer kan tiaw na.") :o

i pronounced plort as "bplod" (down intonation)...not sure if it was right but he seemed to understand it (plus, since i'm not thai, they're kindda with me on mis-pronounciations)

actually...after i said "kor hai bin bplod pai"...he repeated it as "kor hai dern taang duay kwaam bplod pai". do they mean the same?

Yes. The phrase your friend suggested is a more standard way of saying it. (Note it is also among David's suggestions above).

The first version is grammatically correct, but a little short, and I have not personally heard a Thai person use it.

Another one I've come across:

เดินทางโดยสวัสดีภาพนะครับ/ค่ะ - Have a good trip!
