my guest has left and he was pleasantly surprised that this time i wished him in thai instead of english (normally i'd have said "have a safe trip. jer kan tiaw na.")

i pronounced plort as "bplod" (down intonation)...not sure if it was right but he seemed to understand it (plus, since i'm not thai, they're kindda with me on mis-pronounciations)

actually...after i said "kor hai bin bplod pai"...he repeated it as "kor hai dern taang duay kwaam bplod pai". do they mean the same?

Yes. The phrase your friend suggested is a more standard way of saying it. (Note it is also among David's suggestions above).

The first version is grammatically correct, but a little short, and I have not personally heard a Thai person use it.

Another one I've come across:

เดินทางโดยสวัสดีภาพนะครับ/ค่ะ - Have a good trip!
