Where Do Young Thai People Socialise In Bkk?

Hi

I'm going to Bangkok with my boyfriend in a couple of weeks for the second time and want to go to a few pubs/clubs where young Thai people or students go to get a bit of the 'real' Thailand. Does anyone know or can recommend somewhere suitable? I went to the Q Bar last time so have already done that.

If it's any help we're only there for a few days - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night.

Hope someone can help!

Thanks in advance.

I guess by now from the total lack of response that the main demographic of this board doesn't really hang out with 'normal' young Thai's.

Your best bet it to get hold of a Bangkok Metro, which is sold at most English and Thai news stand. Has a great listing of places to go on a monthy basis. See what takes your fancy and just head on out! Enjoy Bangers!

Wednesday/Thursday/Friday Recommended Intinerary

* Bed Supperclub (Sukhumvit soi 11-looks like a big hovering spacey box), hop in for a nice meal on the restaurant side and then cruise over to the club side, Thursday suggested if you're into HipHop/R&B.

* Silom Soi 4:

- Tapas, chill out tunes

- Home, HipHop/R&B/Pop

- Speed, HipHop/R&B/Pop

You can also pop in and out of each club around there if you get bored.

* Khaosan Road

- Silk Bar, great place to chill and watch the interesting people and world go by.....

Loads an loads of clubs to pop in and out of as well.

Only recommended if you really want to see where the real, mainstream, young Thais hang out...

* Thonglor (Sukhumvit soi 55), bunch of clubs to hop around as well....

Have fun!

Theres quite a few sois/entertainment venues down soi thong lor which are full of bars where young thai professionals/rich young thais go.. soi 22 for example, you can guarentee for every 150 thais in the bars down there there will only be 1 farang :o

The best times to go are when the top thai bands are playin in em as there crammed with tha nicest pu55y bangkok has to offer...

Dont expect to do much socialising with the locals tho, you will be pretty much ignored unless yer there as part of a thai group :D I see groups of 3 or 4 farang guys come in from time to time, they rarely stay for more than one drink...

Wow! Thanks very much for all the suggestions. After spending most of the time in farang bars last time we really wanted to get out and see what young Thai people are into when we go over there on Tuesday.

Plenty of places for us to choose from!

Thanks again!

150 baht cab ride will get you to the VIP complex in lak si, accross the road from the uni. I have only ever seen one farang there once. Cheap, lots of good food, and many live music acts.

:D

:o B150 from where, i think maybe depends on where in Bkk they stay.

By the way, just a wild stab in the dark, you havent got a mate from England called Steve who now lives in Rayong have ya? :D

There's a place in Soi Rambutree in Banglampoo called DEEP. It's not been open for long but it really pumps on a Friday and Saturday night. If you are staying in the Khao San area, you will be able to find it easy enough.

Full of young Thai's. Good music. You will see very few westerners in there despite the fact that it is only a stones throw from Khao San Rd.

Try Thai places in Thong Lor / Ekkamai / RCA....The Liberty building has a few Thai clubs, and I mean Thai, it helps to have some clued up Thai friends though.

Ratchada soi 4 is good but a few lecherous leering farangs have crept thru but not too many.

Was @ sang salong on thong lor 21 the other night, 2 king size white guys came in with girls that had obviously been rented from somewhere the same evening, dancing round like a pair of drunken apes on ketamine thinkin they owned the place, they looked like some sort of hired entertainment act for everyone.. Was a site for sore eyes :o

the colloseum down sukumvit is always a good mainly thai show....and ratchada and ko sarn i guess, its always mistified me how the ko sarn clubs are usually full of thais and not farangs

Anyone tried the Tawan Daeng German Brewhouse on Rama 3. Went there a couple of times with Thai friends in November. Not just young Thais, all age groups, mainly Thai music but good stuff, not many farangs and the place was packed ,even mid week. No cover charge. Food and drink excellent.

Coliseum has a good Thai show, if looking the face of Toxin (and other Thai politicians) crafted in foam is not too disturbing.

Hollywood disco also has a nice show.

Those places have mainly thai customers (i would say 95%), and it always looks different to see a disco without a dance floor.

Two areas of note are:

Ekamai (Mid?-Sukhumvit) a place called Giga (gigabyte) where we heard live Thai pop music, packed to the gills with young Thais. I was there with a group of MBA students from Thammasat University. This place played a very Thai pop style of music which wouldnt have been so bad if I wasn't sitting a foot away from the blasted speaker. The seating here is just wooden benches and wooden tables lined from one side of the building to the other. Everybody I saw there including our table was drinking Johnny Walker Black.

The other place was in Ratchada at a bar/club/restaurant called Snop which had a less affluent demographic but was great fun nonetheless. I was there with undergrads from a local university. This place actually looks alot better in terms of design and furnishings, but I could tell they were less affluent because everyone was drinking Piper 100 (1/2 the price).

You would be surprised how many hi-so Thais rarely go to the popular expat nightclubs (Bed, Q, Mystique, Spasso, Thin, etc..). Most of my friends rarely go to any of these clubs, being more comfortable around just Thai people. Although, my Thai friends that live in America or studied in America go almost exclusively to the expat hangouts.

I am a 28 year old American and although I don't live in Thailand, I spend about 60 days cumulatively per year in Bangkok . My parents own an apartment in Bangkok that they use seldomly, which works out perfectly for me!

Henry P - Welcome to the board!

Just curious, how come your folks own a place in Bangkok?

Thanks for the welcome Ted.

My parents (they are duel citizens) live primarily in Korea, but sent me to live permanently in the states at age 8.

My father was the head of a Korean multinational's offices in Bangkok from 1999 until his retirement in March of 2002. I never asked them what their reasoning was, but I know that they lived in a leased apartment for some time before making the actual purchase.

Although they lived in Bangkok for the better part of 3 years, My first visit to Thailand was in Christmas of 2002 after they had moved back to Korea.

I met my Thai girlfriend while she was doing a summer abroad program in 2002 at my law school in America. Well... I guess you can figure out my motivation for visiting Thailand post 2002.

It's worth mentioning that my parents and I have never been in Thailand at the same time, the closest we got was they were in Kuala Lumpur last Dec 2003 when I was in Bangkok.

I am taking the bar exam in February, and since results arent released until May, I will be taking a (well deserved) 3 month vacation in Bangkok immediately after the bar.

If I pass the bar, I guess its time to come back to the states and get serious, but if I dont... (I am no hurry to take the bar again in July) I will probably spend the next year in LOS waiting for my girlfriend to finish up her graduate work at Chula.

Well, if your in Thailand in the coming months, The first beer is on me! Cheers! :o

I guess you just got lucky Henry P. :D I think youve got the set up to make many members of the board jealous. You've kind of got a win win situation on your hands though haven't you? Pass the bar, get practicing, get the experience and you play your cards right your onto some serious cash. Fail, put your feet up rent free in a cushy condo in the big mango with your cup cake! Can't be too many with that set up

I myself am based in Singapore although with cheap flights, friends dotted about the region I get around S E Asia on a regular basis.

Extremely envious. :o

hey..

so a few of you mentioned Thong Lor as a place where young thais hang out.. I'd love to hear a little more.. if I take the BTS skytrain to Thong Lor, would I be in a good area..? any other specific places..? I don't mind wandering around a bit, but I'd like to have some sort of destination early in the night. thanks! I might check it out next weekend.
