NBT TV Phuket Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 MiniVDO on http://thainews.prd.go.th/newsenglish/prev...php?news_id=421 After a Malaria outbreak with a number of patients was found, the Ranong authority has now stepped in to tackle the disease. 76% of the patients were found in Kraburi district which borders with Myanmar and most of the population there does rubber planting, so they are more vulnerable to contract the diseases. The provincial public chief, Thongchai Kiratihattayakorn however stressed that the situation is now easing and there is no cause to concern tourists. Information from the World Health Organization or WHO states that Malaria is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted via the bites of infected mosquitoes. Symptoms of malaria include fever, headache, and vomiting, and usually appear between 10 and 15 days after a mosquito bite. If not treated, malaria can quickly become life-threatening by disrupting the blood supply to vital organs. Key interventions to control malaria include prompt and effective treatment with artemisinin-based combination therapies; use of insecticidal nets by people at risk; and indoor residual spraying with insecticide to control the vector mosquitoes. Andaman News NBT (VHF dial) + maybe FM90.5 Radio Thailand at 8.30am & perhaps relays/repeats on local Cable TV channel 1, broadcast to Phang Nga, Krabi & Phuket provinces, & possibly FM108 Mazz Radio 7.30pm in Phuket, Tuesday 15 July 2008 & http://thainews.prd.go.th/newsenglish/ Contact [email protected]

NBT TV Phuket Posted July 16, 2008 Author Posted July 16, 2008 Moderators, why is the Malaria news in Ranong on the Krabi Board? I put it in here after discussing with Buckwheat & George and as per description of this forum: "Krabi & Andaman Coast general topics" so Ranong, Phang Nga, Trang & Satun stories could go in here too.
