Why did I not try this before, one would think going to a proxy in the States to get a web site in the States or other place would be slower not faster then using a direact link (I use open DNS) but no,  I found out just awhile ago that if I use a US based proxy I can open Thaivisa and all other sites everywhere 8x times faster.  Almost normal.

My web pages load at 300 to 600 B/s 24/7 (notice the missing k) vary slow and traceroutes show delays insterted at the same point inside ToT everytime without proxy and all the same sites open at 8 and 10KB/s if I use the US based proxy I picked at random, vary nice.  I v been getting it stuck to me by ToT the whole time.

It confuses me how this would work because its the same IP to and from the proxy as would be used to any of these sites.

I recorded the activity on laptop and will show them.  Forcing me to use a proxy for everything like Linux forums and Thaivisa is really strange behavior on their part and explains why they never try to fix my problem, its just they way they wanted it to be.  I can record the browser activity but can't find a way to run the traceroute with a proxy in the address, but I bet the inserted delays go missing if I could.  I'll keep working on that one.  Really wild is opening the proxy site itself is slow but using it is 8x faster.  :D

This explains why sites both inside and outside Thailand are slow and this fixes both, I can load a Thai Gov web site 8x faster from the US proxy.  I made sure to record that one.  :o

I guess you must know the answer to this then.

"It confuses me how this would work because its the same IP to and from the proxy as would be used to any of these sites".

Let me reword it

Why if its the same IP does this work?

I was also hoping to learn something here in my rant, sorry about that part.

I think there's three possible reasons barring ToT actively slowing down the sites.

1. ToT's DNS servers are overloaded) or are checking everything against some block list). You could check this by trying some alternative - i.e. openDNS. Although this would tend to be an issue on initially connecting, and less of an issue once the site has come up (unless the domain name changes).

2. They're doing some sort of data inspection. Although unless you're connecting using a secure proxy (i.e. using SSL) which would mean that doesn't work (as the packets are encrypted), it wouldn't make a lot of sense.

3. Badly configured routers on ToT's part. In this case, the routers have a really good connection to the proxy server you're using, but are doing something stupid for the other addresses. (or are sending you down an overloaded pipe, which you're avoiding by going through the proxy).

Given Thaivisa is in Singapore, if it was only Thaivisa, it could be that ToT are routing you through an overloaded / bandwidth-restricted pipe between Thailand and Singapore, where the proxy means you're using a fatter pipe to the US, and, from there, a fatter pipe to Singapore.

I sometimes use Australian based proxies when my connection speed slows down. Like the OP, I found it often gives a big boost in speed. I don't know why but I had assumed the connections through to Oz were less crowded. Interesting that a proxy through to the US gives the same result!

Crappy routing?

I sometimes run a VPN tunnel to the office network of a friend in the USA (apparently this is illegal to do so now :o ).

And yes, I have noticed tremendous speed boosts doing that. Where before speeds during peak hours can drop to 60% of rated speed (on an expensive CAT connection), when using the VPN it went straight up to 95% of rated speed. Several sites hosted in the US were very much faster loading...

There were some drawbacks though, mainly much increased latency when visiting Asian based sites, including TV.

How can I implement a proxy server and can you suggest a good one to try? Using Open DNS at the moment.
