To change which program starts when you double-click a file whose file type is associated with a particular program, follow these steps:

1. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click a file for which you want to change the program that opens that file type, and then use either of the following methods to change which program starts:

• Click Open With to choose the program that you want.

• Point to Open With, and then click Choose Program to choose the program that you want.

2. Notice that theOpen With dialog box appears. Use one of the following methods to select the program that you want to use to open this kind of file:

• In the Programs list, click the program that you want.

• Click Browse, locate and then click the program that you want to use, and then click OK.

• Click Look for the appropriate program on the Web to browse the Internet for the program that you want.

3. Click to select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box if it is not already selected.

4. Click OK.

Note From now on, Windows XP will open all files that have this file name extension in the associated program. To change this, you would have to follow these steps again and associate a different program with this file name extension.

Depends what program you want the files to be associated with (open In) If like me you use Windows Media Player go “Tools” in WMP then “Options” then click the tab “File Types” and “Select all” - “Apply” – “OK” This will now open all media files in WMP.

You can still use Win Amp of course but you have to right click on the files to “Open With” WinAmp.

If you favorite program is something else besides WMP it should have the same option to associate all files to that program.

Or If I remember correctly you can “De-Select” all file types in WinAmp, this will restore your original associations.

Yep, a better way to solve this problem.

  • Open winamp, press CTRL P to open preferences.
  • On the left, choose 'File Types'.
  • De-select filetypes you don't want winamp to be the default app for. Clicking 'Audio Only' should be an easy way to accomplish this in one click.

I hate when software does that and tries to take over icons and files extensions. Apple Quicktime is particularly bad for that. Usually end up cancelling the installation unless the software is really necessary.

Another way of doing it without looking for specific files and its' extension is to open Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types. This will list all files and their associated application and then can change it as mentioned above. Also some of the selections give you an Advanced button where you can change the icon or a Restore button to return the icon to the original application.

Its happened to me with different players over the years when it installs a box will appear asking if you want Iplayer/winamp/sonicstage/ whatever to be your default player,

make sure you un-tick it.

I install step by step now never say yes until i am sure its ok.

yeah. id second the removal of winamp, is that piece of cr@p still full of spyware or have they taken all of that out now? I remember reading that there was some other software in winamp that was dodgy

I know not what you asked for but you could do worse than give GOM player a try. It’s free and will play music and movies, has it’s own codec’s and plays some movies that Windows Media Player cant.

Just remember to Select None (except .gom) under Preferences – Others. Or you will have the same file association problem as before. :o

Another method is to use the "assoc" command in the DOS command prompt.

Type "help assoc" for how to use.

Trying to find what is associated with .jpg files on my PC:

C:\>assoc .jpg
.jpg=jpegfile

C:\>assoc jpegfile
jpegfile=JPEG Image

C:\>assoc JPEG Image
File association not found for extension JPEG

C:\>assoc "JPEG Image"
File association not found for extension "JPEG

C:\>

Any ideas?

See my post #6 above. It lists associated files to all file extensions. When I use "assoc .jpg" under DOS I see ACDSee Pro as the associated file to .jpg. You can just type "assoc" (without parenthesis) to see all extensions at the command prompt. However if you have a very large number of them then better to use "assoc | more" to page through them

Forgot how much fun DOS was. :D

Looking at the above, it seems you have no associations (applications) and may be handled by Windows only. Double click on a .jpg file and see what application shows up. :o

Interesting that you get the actual program listed.

When I use "assoc", I first get "jpegfile", then "JPEG Image" but don't know the correct syntax with "assoc" to go any further.

I know all the other ways to do it and know what program is actually associated with .jpg files, but I'm curious as to how to get "assoc" to work with "JPEG Image".

Edit:

You've been editing while I've been writing!

Yes, DOS is great fun! :o

If I use Explorer/Folder/Options/File Types, it correctly lists "Compupic" as the program.

But it also lists "JPE" and "JPEG" extensions as "JPEG Image" file type, which is associated with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Odd.

Edit #2:

Yes, I did the 'assoc | more' earlier, but there was only a list of file extensions, the "JPEG Image" file type was not listed.

Guys, you're making way too much work out of this. Like i stated before, he simply needs to tell winamp to play audio files only and the other file associations will be restored, icons and all. One click.
