Have just had True ADSL connected in my condo in Bangkok.

Although there seems to be a problem getting it connected.

I am not in BKK at the moment which complicates it further, but my husband is trying to set it up and it just doesn't seem to work.

He phoned True help centre and they told him that it is a problem with some card in the computer and to get that sorted out first, big help!

However I don't understand as it's a new laptop with Windows Vista, it's not an old model. From the phone call he got the impression the problem was to do with Windows Vista.

Just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem and any solutions?

It is classic that the ISP techs blame your hardware before helping you.

I am fairly sure that it is a matter of configuration and nothing is broken on your machine if it is a new notebook.

There are lots of small companies in Bangkok that will come assist you in configuring the ADSL for a small fee.

It should however be pretty much plug and play, so if True left a guide with you, you might have missed a point in it somewhere.

The strange thing is I have used the exact same computer with True ADSL in Bangkok before at another condo, no problems.

I suspect the modem/router they have supplied (it came free) doesn't support Windows Vista.

Or could there be something else wrong?

Doubt it's the router. First thing is to hook it up (even without your notebook/PC hooked up) and see which lights come on - there will be a light for the ADSL - if it's on, then you've probably got a connection. If it's not - then you need to check to see if your condo has hooked up the line properly.

If you cannot get a green light on the ADSL led, the problem is not with you and True/the condo need to fix it. If, on the other hand, you do get a green light, you really should be able to connect, at least by LAN cable.

Could you tell us what model of modem/router you are using?

By the sound of it - connects by LAN cable.

You can potentially change to the USB type of modem - if all else fails.

Beginning with the basics. Your phone line - does it have a dial tone? Voice calls work normally? You have one of those splitters fitted?

It's been at least a week since you requested service? Because it can take that long to turn on ADSL.

Just insist that one of True's technicians come and get it working. You'll have to call and set up an appointment for them to come -- that's the biggest problem.

There are lots of things one has to setup.

The information isn't quite out their and most of the "True" have no idea how to setup a router mode.

1) Modulation type: You have to select ITU G.992.1 or G.DMT

2) VPI setting should be 0

3) VCI setting should be 100

4) WAN should be PPPoE

5) Authentication I set to PAP

6) Modulation should be PPPoE LLC

7) MTU and MRU should be 1492

8) NAT should be enabled and dynamic IP should be selected

All of this depends on the router brand. The modem tha come with the package are not set to these specs and have to be accessed and changed with a password through the gateway. Usually 192.168.1.1

Thank you for the input. Have finally got it sorted out. We were going to get a True technician to come and set it up, which is really what they should have done in the first place. But went for the telephone help one more time.

This time actually got someone who knew what they were talking about and it took only a few minutes.

The info from the first tel. call to True was basically all wrong!
