My computer has developed an error sound on startup. I know it means something but what??

It goes 'beeeep, beep, beep', one long and two short.

I am using Linux aith Ubuntu but it never gets to the operating system, it must be hardware....

The manual for the mainboard may have the POST (power on self test) audio errors listed. I believe that one is a memory error. Two other possibilities are video card or temperature problem.

If you have multiple memory modules, remove all of them and put one back in. Even if just one, remove it and re-seat it back in the slot.

I think Tywais is putting you in the right direction. Every time this type of thing has happened to me, simply removing the video card and/or memory modules and cleaning the gold-plated contacts with a pencil eraser before reseating them has solved the problem for me.

As Tywais said.

Some motherboards that will give this error if a fan failed to spin.

Check the name and model of motherboard and consult the manual or Google.

Thank you all, just removed the memory, slotted it back in and away it went....Now if I could just get my Logitech mouse/keyboard to work properly, all would be well!!

Is your mouse scrolling when it is not supposed to be? Are drop-down menus moving on their own?

I have exactly the same problem with one PC. Also had a lot of beeps, memory cleaning and re-seating got rid of the beeps but mouse n keyboard still have problems. Mouse n KB are Ok and working fine on other PCs.

Where else to look for to solve this problem?

P.S. sorry Niloc if I hijacked your topic but somehow it fits exactly into what I would like to know.

I fixed both the mouse problem and the keyboard. I had to hijack the AAA dry cells from the television remote and luckily I had a couple of rechargeable AA's in the charger, A bit of fiddling and away it went!!
