Hi All

I have just made the tragic mistake of upgrading my iPhone software to version 2. Steve Jobs decided it would be nice to 'brick' all phones that are jailbroken/open to all networks during the software upgrade.

My 18,000 baht iPhone is now a farking brick.

Has anyone made the same mistake and if so, did you manage to fix it?

I am so gutted. I cant believe this has happened.

Devastated actualy. A perfectly good iPhone that I have always treated with kid loves is now a total brick thanks to an upgrade that I Tunes invited me to download. If I cant fix it, its 18,000 I have to find once more to buy another one.

Steve Jobs wouldnt notice 18,000 but it sure hurts my pocket.

Maybe you just need it unlocked again since the upgrade if so then MBK do it for 500 baht, I know it's a bit late but you should never upgrade your phone from Apple.

Good luck my heart goes out to you.

Put it in recovery mode and restore it from itunes.

(press and hold sleep & home for 30 seconds or longer).

Grab the lates pwnage tool & firmare 2.1 (the tool will help you). patch and install that.

If its bricked the same way mine was, showing the "connect to itunes" screen (usb > cd), don't worry it can be fixed. I tried everything including restoring but nothing seemed to work.

I managed to fix it myself by downgrading but it was a bit of a pain, if you are near mbk or somewhere similar I'd take it there as they have most likely seen this many times. If not I fixed it by following these 2 guides:

http://kerdsri.com/2008/07/14/downgrade-ip...mware-20-to-14/

http://www.anewmorning.com/2008/07/20/how-...hone-20-to-114/

Tools:

Itunes 7.5 - (Itunes won't let you downgrade to a lower version making you have to delete the newer version, I didn't want to do this on my mac so I used my acer with windows to do it, if you have another computer available without itunes use that)

Iphone firmware 1.1.4

ibrickr (kicks it out of recovery mode)

kiphone (downgrades the baseband)

pwnage tool 2.1/winpwn 2.1 (Gets the latest firmware back, this is the easiest to use and safer than zipphone, iclarified.com has good step by step guides for using this.)

Hope this helps!!!

It is very very very hard to get an iPhone to brick in a way it can't be fixed. Take it to MBK like the others have said. In the future don't jump on new firmware if you do not know what you are doing. Although I do understand the temptation when Itunes tells you that it has something new.

I second the use of Pwnage. Easy tool to use and you can't brick your phone using it. Much better doing it yourself than having the boys at Tukcom loading all sorts of stuff you probably don't want. I have just upgraded to 2.1 with no problems using Pwnage.

Thanks people for the replies

Djk - thanks for the links etc, much appreciated. I did try and follow them but i am hopeless with this type of problem and gave in. I went to MBK in the end and was pretty suprised how mad allthe shops are for iPhone now. They are everywhere..... with all the accessories you could think of and loads of shops offering tech services.

I picked a random shop and for 800TB, they fixed it in 2 hours. I was worried at first as they took it to bits and dived for a soldering iro - christ knows why - but i watched them closely for 45 mins and three other people truned up (2 of them Thais) with the same issue and they also had the same treatment, so they must know what they are doing.

Its fine again now and actualy better than before. I have the upgrade so all the extra features are there and they also loaded8 pages of apps - halfof them are daft games but the other half are pretty cooll little apps to mess around with.

So all in all, a result.

Having many pages of apps slows down the springboard. I found a utility on Installer called "Catagories" that puts your apps into different folders (games/utilities/finance/networking for example) and will bring your springboard page count right down (and speedy too).

LOL Only in Thailand would they fix a software issue with a soldering iron. I guess if it works great though.

Maybe they are just having a bit of fun with those customers that are watching.. seeing them go all pale in the face. Hehehe :o

The tools provided - PwnageTool and QuickPwn - are really all you need to do whatever you want with your iPhone. I just updated mine to 2.1 with Pwnage. It worked flawlessly. Pwnage Tool also has the intriguing option of replacing the boot logo with one of your own choosing.

That said, I'd still recommend having MBK do it because the documentation for these tools is non-existant and they are not entirely intuitive. They are easy to use only if you know what you are doing. There are many pitfalls along the way.

They're not like the venerable Ziphone app which really did it all for you, on the push of a single button. Sadly, Ziphone is no longer around.
