I was having a conversation with a friend and she used this phrase. ชีวิตชีวา (cheewit cheewar). I can't find a translation for it. can anyone help?

มีชีวิตชีวา [meeM cheeM witH cheeM waaM] [V] be jolly; be merry; be mirthful; be jubilant; be joyous

Syn. ครึ้กครื้น, รื่นเริง, เบิกบานใจ, สดชื่น, กระปรี้กระเปร่า

Def. มีความสดชื่นรื่นเริงกระฉับกระเฉง, ไม่เป็นทุกข์.

To be lively, happy, and energetic; not to be unhappy

Sample:บ้านกลับมีชีวิตชีวาอีกครั้งเพราะเสียงร้องหลานชายคนใหม่ของครอบครัว

The home has returned to be happy and joyous once more because of the cries of the family's new-born grandson.

Right off the cuff I'd say 'energetic', 'full of life', 'bursting with energy' 'having joi de vivre', 'lively' etc.

The 'jolly', 'merry' connotation was a bit new to me although now that I think of how I've heard it in context I can see how it fits together. Perhaps my understanding has been incomplete all this time.

Frankly, I agree with Meadish regarding the English definition found in Lexitron; my understanding was similar to his. In fact, here is the RID: มีชีวิตชีวาว. มีความสดชื่นคึกคัก.

The primary meaning of the word "สดชื่น" in Lexitron is "be fresh; be lively; be vigorous"; the secondary meaning is "be delighted; be cheerful; be joyful; be happy; be merry". As for "คึกคัก", the primary English definition is "be vigorous; be agile; be active; be strong; be robust; be vivacious; be energetic; be gay." Both these definitions from the RID lend support to Meadish's view.
