Looking For A Malay Or Indonesian Food...

Hello hello !

It looks like Chiang Mai does not lack Japanese and Italian restaurants... But I'm looking for Malay or Indonesian food, where I can get mee goreng, teh tarik, roti canai, rendang or pical or things like that. Anyone have ever seen one ? I haven't got a glimpse of one... If you don't know of any, maybe southern Thailand food will do, as they are culturally close to Malaysia ?

Thanks a lot :o

I would love a true Indo/Malay place.. But indeed some Southern Thai food comes close.

There are many good Southern Thai restaurants around Chiang Mai, most of them small places. There are two kinds, the ones that are a bit more mainstream / chinese and then the real deal. :o Don't get me wrong, the former are still well worth a visit and include for example Phuket Laikhram on Suthep Road just East of the Canal Road intersecton, and Had Yai Choke Dee on Chang Klan road, not far from Chiang Mai Land.

For a good 'real deal' place try for example the one on Charoen Muang road, on the corner of the third traffic lights East from Nawarat Bridge. But there are several.

Had Yai Choke Dee has a mix of Central Thai food and Southern food. Some really good stuff around there, and fast as it's pretty much 100% a 'rice & curry' shop in the sense that you select by pointing at what they have on display. Phuket Lai Khram has that as well, BUT they also have a made to order menu which has some really really good dishes on it, like the curried wild boar dish. (phad phed moo paa). Also try their Southern style Khanom Jeen, even when you're normally not a fan of Khanom Jeen in the usual varieties.. The Southern style you'd normally find in places like Phuket (ok.. :o ) and Trang and is amazing; it's served with a yellow curry sauce and some sweet/pickled vegetables. Both these places are very popular and well established.

When I say real deal I guess I just mean they have more dishes that are the ueber-spicy type that Southern food is famous for. I don't know the name of the place on Charoen Muang.. the other buildings on the 3 remaining corners of that intersection are a bridal shop, a tyre service shop and a bank/financial building. :D Anyway, here is the street level view of the place in mapjack.com : http://www.mapjack.com/?PxYyUvekacBG It's not fancy, but nice people running the place.

Hi, I'm Indonesian, and yes, I'm looking also for Indonesian food, but there's none in Chiang Mai :o

Sometimes my wife can cook Indonesian food, but it would be nice and practical if there's a Malay or Indonesian restaurant in Chiang Mai, especially the one that is suitable for Moslem.

As for "mie goreng", you can buy instant noodle imported from Indonesia, the brand name is "Indomie", you can buy it from Tops at Airport Central Plaza. There are several flavours, including "mie goreng" flavor.

malaysian food is extremely easy to cook and almost all the ingredients are available in chiang mai. i have taught my maid to make nasi lemak and she makes some whenever i have the craving for it :o pandan leaves (bai toey), coconut milk and slices of ginger is all your need for the rice. peanuts and anchovies available. sambal - well get some dried chilis and follow some good online recipes.

roti canai can also be got easily. go to any one of the roti stalls and ask them to super enlarge it. no sugar or milk on it and thats it. make some fish or chicken curry and dall and there u have roti canai malaysian style. teh tarik. well. there is this Chochai stall or something like that which does teh tarik, in Tops, Big-C, Carrefour. tell them to cut down on the sweetened milk and make it a jumbo size.

as for rendang, all of the ingredients are available easily in mom and pop shops. get a recipe online and make yourself some. lemang to go with it is already available chiang mai style.

the only thing i import from malaysia whenever possible is ikan bilis (anchovies). the ones available here is of horrible quality.

Happy Eating.

Secret Recipe ( a franchise off Malaysia) has opened a branch at Central Airport Plaza next to Sizzlers. To my delight, they offer Seafood Curry Laksa, Singapore Laksa and Nasi Lemak. They are also well known to carry tasty cakes and brownies. Pasta dishes were a delight as well. The missus had chicken lasagna and it was lovely. Edited by tigerbeer

There are few 'Halal resturants' behind Night Bazzar. It's on the same streach of road as PornPing hotel. Go further down like 500meters. You can see a Malay Mosques and a small soi leading to mosques.

Once you enter the soi, go down abother 20 meters and I like the resturant on the righ hand side.

They offer rather nice mutton redang.

I missed the Malay achar achar though! Never find any here!

Very Nice. I think I going to try the Malay food by the mosque. I think I find it next to the kaho soi islam, or maybe the same, I have to see. I wish I can find real Indonesian here too. For southern Thailand food I go to the shop on the opposite side of the front of Wat Prasing. Many different thing from normal Thai food and only some very spicy.

Youre all missing a hidden....inexpensive..gem!! Theres a small Garden Restaurant called HINLAY, run by a charming Thai guy who has travelled and worked extensively abroad. He advertises it as a " Curry Restaurant", lots of Indian Curries yes, but also Malay and Indonesian Curries too. Basically, he does the curries, rice, and roti bread....dont go expecting Onion Bhaji, Somosas etc because....its not an Indian Restaurant!! He does all the cooking himself, and most of the serving too and its very nice!!

Location? Difficult to describe exactly but here goes. Over Narawat Bridge, turn left. Go past Riverside and Good View, take next right, theres a Mitsubishi dealership on the corner, after about 150 metres, turn left, then take next right, and Hinlay is about 200 metres on the right, inside a gate with a nice garden.

By the way, I am a customer there, not advertising, I dont even know the owners name so please dont think I m indulging in what some people do on here to talk up their place!! Its just a nice cheap place with good curries!!
