Toyota Fortuner - Winding Noise From Abs Unit

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Would like to see your collective wisdom on the a/m issue.

I've recently noticed that at start up, and just begining to move off, I can hear a distinct winding sound from the front right hand side of the engine compartment. I've since traced it to the ABS unit.

On several occasions under off-road conditions, the ABS kicked in, and I can hear an amplified winding sound similar to the start-up noise.

Now, I've owned many cars with ABS, and have a good feel of the usual ABS "tuck tuck tuck" noise it makes when it is working, but winding noise! It is new to me.

I would like to check it you guys who drives a Fortuner shares similar experiences.

My local dealer tries to insist that it is normal, but the engineer in me tells me otherwise.

Your views pls.

Cheers,

Reichew

Any Fortuner owners care to lend a helping hand??

I don't have a fortuner but I did have a 4X4 Toyota pickup. I would suggest you find a dirt road where you can slam on the brakes to see what happens. My pickup sounded like a machine gun but after a few emergency stops, it seemed to get better. The dealer always told me that there was nothing wrong with the ABS. Maybe the dealer was right but the noise was very loud.
