Need A Bit Of Help

Cannot seem to find the translation for two separate Thai words. Hope someone can help. Sorry if its hard to decipher, just writing it as close to what I am hearing as possible.

1st one: Ban Chum or Ban Cham. (I think its Ban Cham)

2nd one: Chum or Cham or Chom. (I think its Chum)

Apparently both complimentary, not negative words.

Scratching my head trying to find an English definition!

Try going to http://www.thai-language.com/dict/ and entering ban cham in the reverse transcription box - this will give you a choice of possible meanings from which you might be able to guess the meaning from context.

Hi phaeton. I do always use my dict and thai-language.com first before asking for help. I just cant seem to find anything, maybe im not spelling it right.

The context in which it was used was as a pet-name/nik-name. So not much of a context really, sorry.

Ok, the first one is apparently related to สวย and the second something to do with being a lady, possibly ladylike.

I suppose think of it as a puzzle..? Sorry.

Tried some new searches on relating words in thai-language and as part of a component โฉม chŏhm came up. Might be one part..but I think I need to find out more about what tone it is. (edit: also ชม chohm 1. [verb] to admire; compliment; praise; commend; extol; flatter; pay tribute to; salute; speak highly of)

Sorry to have provided so little info. Wayyyy to many variables.

Feel a bit embarressed now to have asked for help when supplying SO little info!

Will post again when/if I can get a bit more clarification.

This word was from movie "Pretty Woman" which had Thai name as "ผู้หญิงบานฉ่ำ".

I dont think we have word บานฉ่ำ in Thai dictionary but I would guess it means " happy or cheerful"

Taking the name of the movie into consideration, would บานฉ่ำ have the meaning of "pretty, lovely, sweet"?

When "Googling" บานฉ่ำ, you can find many examples where บานฉ่ำ seems to be used as a nickname for Julia Roberts. Maybe something that came about after the movie "Pretty Woman".

Well, I have now found out that the Ban Cham DOES seem to herald from the Pretty Woman movie. Thank you!

Thing is, im often set tasks from the person Im mainly learning Thai from. Im given words from time to time, but without the definition, then I have to do a bit of hunting. Sometimes I get very stuck. Thats why I decided to try here.

Anyway, when i mentioned the Pretty Woman association, it resulted in surprise, laughter, a nod and a big smile. Bingo! So thanks again.

As for the second word, it apparently relates to Ban Cham, but again dont have exact definition. I forgot to write down exactly how it was pronounced, but will do so later. My ear isnt tuned enough into the various tones yet. Getting there, but slowly. :/
