Uk Drivers License

Featured Replies

I have a UK drivers lic valid another 25 years but the UK postal address on it will expire soon as the property is sold and I will have no address in the UK, though I will have a UK passport. I have lived in and out of Thailand for the last 25 years, married to a Thai, but no work permit in Thailand.

Without a UK address, will it not be possible to have a driving lic? I need it to validate my International Lic. Easiest maybe leave things as they are and keep original UK address on it, though someone else will be using that address in future? Or can UK driv lic have overseas address??

Any feedback appreciated.

The address on your licence is used for 1) sending reminders and other information about licences and 2) directing police etc. for issuing tickets, fixed penalties etc.

The DVLA say:

You must tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) immediately of any changes to your name, address or both. You can update your driving licence online or send it to DVLA for amendment. A new licence will be issued free of charge unless your photograph’s due for renewal.

...

Remember, if you permanently move to another country, you can’t register your new address on your British driving licence. You’ll need to contact the driving licence authority in your country of residence.

Also you have to send in the old licence and get the replacement sent to the new UK address, even if it is only a proxy address.

So from a UK DVLA point of view, you must have a UK address, even if it's only a proxy (friend's address), or get yourself a Thai licence. It may also have implications for your Thai insurance.
