Applicant : 22 years old unemployed Thai. History of extensive travel in Asia for the past 2 years, 1 used visa to Japan (30 days) in 2007, 1 used Shengen visa (30 days) in 2007 and one still unused (30 days) for 2008. About constant 50k baht in bank account for last 2 years

Sponsor, partner : Double EU nationalities, work in Japan (permanent residence for over 30 years) and retirement yearly extensions in Thailand for 5 years.

1. Applied for Pin number through Embassy's website mid October

2. Looked for an appointment early November, earliest already available 10 days later

3. Paid fee at post office

4. Fill-in (online) D-156 and 157 forms including 1 picture (5cm x 5cm)

5. Made 3 folders as follows :

a. Appointment details (print-out confirmation from Embassy's website), ID card

b. Main application folder with the 2 forms (156 and 157) and the extra sheets for the info that could not be contained in the form's provided space, passport, fee receipt from post office

c. Extra supporting document folder split into applicant documents and sponsor documents

Provided history of previous employments in doc file (2 one year jobs), and stated currently unemployed but some part-time work when alone in Bangkok.

Provided history of previous overseas trips (mostly together) with matching entries and exit stamps from our passports

Copies of my permanent visa for Japan and yearly retirement extensions for Thailand

Thai bank books copies (for both of us)

Japan bank copies for me + Japan employer's letter stating job/period and salary

Letter from myself describing our relationship and that I would pay for all his expenses while travelling in the USA with me

Copies of the condo rental contracts (new one just signed for another year)

On day of appointment arrived 7am for later appointment, already many applicants in Embassy compound.

Security check, buy a return envelope from post office (for passport return by EMS)

Window 1 and 2 check your main folder for application forms and finger prints

Go inside and wait to be called during which time you can hear and see other applicants in the interview booths

If application is granted, passport is kept and sent later or in case of emergency visa issued on spot

If application refused, applicant told why and given back all documents except application form

Interview was short, polite and to the point (in Thai)

Mainly establishing relationship

Confirming previous trips and present lifestyle (living apart but travelling together nearly every month and resident together in Thailand for extended periods)

Told that visa was granted and will arrive within 3-4 days

Passport delivered on day 3 (interview on day 1) with shiny 10 years B1/B2 visa inside

I think the process was easy and painless, maybe we were lucky

I want to thank all on this forum who contributed information which we used to make this application a success

It also shows that even an unemployed young Thai male can get a tourist visa to visit the USA

We surely were helped by the fact that I am not a US citizen/resident giving a lot of weight to his statement that he was coming back with me to Thailand at the end of our planned trip.

Hawaii here we come !

Now if only the UK was as reasonable as this......they sent back the (nearly identical) file the very next day we applied saying they did not believe he would leave at the end of our planned 2 days in the UK (boat trip from Calais across the channel).....

BTW the USA interviewer did not question the very obvious UK application refusal stamp in the passport

Good luck to all
