lawyer15 Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Find a lawyer by referral that other small or medium sized businesses you know use -- businesses that actually have been around and have used the person for a couple years. Avoid a lawyer that offers to take equity in your company in lieu of a fee or a lawyer who does not appear to have any knowledge in small business formation or who promises to "hook you up" with investors he or she knows for a fee. What you want is a small business lawyer that will offer you a fair fee and is doing well enough that they have no interest in making a fast buck off of ripping you off but is not so busy that they will ignore you. Be forewarned that you will likely need to put forward a retainer. Hopefully you can talk to whoever is your referall and figure out what they did as a retainer.
